Foreign Films...

Right, as I'm just about to bugger off and watch Ring 0, I thought I'd pose a quicky for ya's:

How many of you watch foreign (language) films, and which are your faves?

For me, I've seen loads, but my faves are:

Amelie <--One of my fave films full stop, heart warming, charming, funny, quirky & superb.
Ring Cycle (Ring 0, Ring and Ring 2) <-- Jap psychological horror, great viewing.
Seven Samurai <--Oldy, but definitely a goody.
Run Lola Run <--Good thriller, with some odd & funny moments.
Nikita (The 1990 french original directed by Luc Besson) <-- Far far better than the shit American remake.
Akira <--Superlative, nuff said.

So, who's got a decent taste in films which extends beyond the Hollywood sludge factory?

Ring was pretty mediocre tbh. It didn't help the the plot was shit.

Get some BollyWood down you, much as its fashionable right now, all their films are ludicrously cheery. And they explain everything in The Art of Dance.

Battle Royale is spot on, fun film and that psycho Jap lassie - phwwwoor ;).

I watch a lot of subtitled stuff (hate dubbed films) of all genres really. I cannot STAND shit like Betty Blue (films about nothing but staring out the window and being "meaingful").

My faves are Man Bites Dog (jesus GET IT its funny as fuck), The Idiots (scary shit that is), Three Colours Trilogy (you can get all 3 films on one DVD now fact fans)...and as you included Manga my fave is Golgo 13: The Professional.

Hmm might have to put Battle Royale on now ;)

Watched a few but Akira is the main one, can't stand watching the UK version.

I don't especially watch them more than other films.

In other words, if a foreign film is shown on the tele(IE on c4 late at night), i'll give it a chance as i would any film that came on, and be just as likely to watch it as if it were in English...

Forgot about Crouching Tiger! :p

It's good, but never ever FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, watch the english dubbed version, as it changes the film from great to shit.

Battle Royale was ok, didn't think much of it tbh.

I've seen all 3 Ring films now, as I've just finished watching Ring 0, and I have to say I like em all. The plot is a bit hard to figure out, but then again it's refreshing to watch a film which you have to think about in order to figure out what's happened :)

And Bollywood would be much too weird for me - all that smiling constantly, those actors must be on some sort of illegal substance, it's the only explanation.

Either that or years of training has induced facial cramps which ensures their faces stay like that :)

Yup Man Bites Dog is a superb film as are the Kurosawa (spelling) ones and Akira is the best Manga one by far. Would you count all the Hong Kong gun flicks though?

Yeah, but although they're entertaining, they're not exactly great films though.

Analogy: True Lies vs Memento - See what I'm getting at?

I've seen some Dutch porn films. They weren't dubbed so added to the authenticity.

What is a foreign film when you live in a foreign country and you speak the language

Foreign films I would heartily recommend are:

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (HK)**
The Road Home (China)**
Battle Royale (Japan)**
Beijing Bicycle (China)
Il Mare (Korea)
Musa (Korean)
Shaolin Soccer (HK)**
Iron Monkey (HK)
Failan (Korea)
My Sassy Girl (Korea)

I actually thought Amelie was overrated. Not bad, but not all it was hyped up to be.

The ones with ** are what I would deem *UNMISSABLE*.

In case any of you were wondering, the girl in my temporary "tribute" avatar is from 2 of the films I cited in my earlier post - Il Mare & My Sassy Girl.

She's Korean and her name is Jeon Ji-Hyun.

Gorgeous.

I agree Nikita was a damn fine film, but surprizingly many foreign films I have watched and liked are comedies, I recall a film called Le Cop ("Les Ripoux") that is very funny.

How often do you see a foreign film and realize the story has already been done in a US/UK film, then you realize you are in fact watching the _original_ form of the story, the "seven samuri syndrome".

Another hilarious film is, I think, Polish and has a title like "Sex Wars" or something, it's not pr0n but adult comedy with boobies, about two guys who get frozen and end up in the future where men have been wiped out and the world is run by women (surprizingly good looking ones too), some great jokes in it.
