I recently found out that by taking my modem from my pc and connecting it as normal with no tricks or anything to my xbox downstairs which is registered with microsoft with a user id tag i can connect straight to xbox live no probs.
In light of this i had a chat with NTL (my broadband isp) and asked the gent on the phone why they want to charge me £5 a month extra on top of my broadband rental to connect to xbox live on their package?
He tried to give me some bull**** about ethernet hubs and a 2nd isp for my xbox but the long and short of it is they are trying to charge £5 a month for me to use my xbox on my internet connection that im already paying for and they do nothing to earn this money.
If you have an Xbox and want to connect to xbox live try using the modem you use for your pc and it will connect you straight to xbox live once you register with the xbox live starter pack.
This is in no way illegal as you are entitled to this service as you are paying for the line already and paying for xbox lives services upon buying the registration starter pack at about £40 for the year,so NTL SHOULD NOT be trying to charge you twice to use your own line. Its like telling a company,no sorry you cant use your fax machine on the same line as your phone, you have to pay us some more money, can any1 say RIP OFF!!!!! :kissit:

One of my house mates plays XboX live - he's got his Xbox connected to the router via a standard CAT5 cable, and the NTL modem plugged into the router.

And yeah, it's a farce that they charge you extra... though the extra cost may be to do with XboX live support, how to set it up, etc

Support for getting Xbox live to work with an NTL line maybe? It's damn cheeky, but there's people out there who can't tell the difference between a modem and a router, who need everything explained step by step. I assume that's who they're targetting with their £5 a month.

I did the same with my ps2, i just connected the ps2 modem to my ntt cable modem.

Taken out my PC usb wire, then it works, i can be arsed to fiddle with routers, unless someone knows a good FAQ on how to set one up with a console.

The majority of epople should hopefully know not to pay NTl and Blueyonder this fee, although I thought they only charged it because they provide you with a router on rental so you dont have to move cables.
