Foe Lullaby - which instrument?

I asked this question on the VN boards and I got a dumb reply of:

Mary's Horn :rolleyes:

So I'll try you lot...

Well, I'm not super rich and don't intend to buy Mary's Horn for a very long time, if at all. All I was wondering was, is it better to use wind or string instrument for Foe Lullaby. I use harp for Paeon, since it has a bit better range, but supposedly wind instruments are better for potency and the sticking of songs. I've noticed Foe Lullaby has a bit of a sucky range so I'm thnking harp might be better, but will I miss more?

dont you mean horde lullaby as foe is a solo song, isnt it?

For foe a wind is best and for horde depends on what you need I guess? Also read on here that if you change to harp on last moment you still get the harp range(you might already know this, but was bored and went looking around abit and found it).

Ohh yeah, duh, meant Horde Lullaby. Hmm, how do I switch instruments while I'm playing? Is that possible?! Guess I'll read that link...

aparently it is possible and you do it with /equip range "name of item" . Range as apparently thats where you put bard stuff (this works for every other place of equipment aswell, just need to know what the game names it (think you can find that out with /? /equip)

Yes yes I know how to macro to switch instruments, I do it all the time, but doubt it's possible whilst the song is playing..

just copy paste in the web browser and it works or otherwise pc>ffxi>faq&guides>bard guide

and the guy says it does, but dunno when the song determines what effect it gets from the instrument though.

it is possible, the song will go trough the intrument you have equiped when the song finishes... changing the int mid song will screw the animation over tho.,

I'm guessing you don't know what the different kind of effects instruments + singing have on the songs due to that statement...

Not very surprising tbh.

Level 8 and then quit was it?

Well, amusingly enough I decided to put it on Harp but I've not even had the opportunity to use it yet. In fact, the only time I've ever used Horde Lullaby was when I was farming weak orcs for crystals and keys in Ghelsba. Ho hum.

Do you know the difference between instruments? Just for your reference:

Wind = potency
String = range

kthx.

think if the effect of the instrument is only determined at the end, it might be best to let it depend on the situation (if you dont need the range, better have a stronger lullaby?:)).
But guess as basic harp is probably best as you just want them all sleeped for a while.

Yeah, and thinking about it really, I don't think I will use it that often. Possibly on BCNM's if I ever bother to do them on a regular basis, but otherwise it's just the single target lullaby I use on adds.

well thats not strictly accurate, talking about lullaby:

on horde lullaby a harp will have a greater aoe RADIUS. if there is a range difference then its pretty small or non existent, both lullabies will last the same time whether you use a flute or harp, the only thing that effects duration are: the resistance of the monster to dark spells and any +lullaby bonus on your instrument (re mary's horn^^)

what i and alot of bards do in a bcnm situation would be use my harp for the first lullaby and the mary's horn once i have a tight grouping.

if you have no horn then any instrument with +chr is good to help land the song.

as a final note the difference between a mary's horn and a normal instrument is maybe 10% so in a bcnm you can:

1 sleep
2 re-blink or play song
3 play song whatever

and you'll have a few seconds to play with...

with no horn you'll find the mobs waking up as you reach part 3.
