Focus Staves - Where to get them?

Hello,

I'm also a newbie, been playing for about 5 days now. I currently have a level 9 Wizard called Mortevrae, so if you happen to stumble into me, please give me some plats :) Only joking...

The real reason why I'm writing is that I need some help.
I've heard you can get new focus staves which are better than the default that you get when starting your new class. Mine only has 4/4/4 at the moment, I want staves that have more benefits...

Also, where can you get new armors etc.? I currently have this brocade cloth set, which isn't very good. Are there any other armors out there which can absorb some dmg that higher mobs do to you by about 50%?

Tomb of Mithra is a good place for exp but it's not good for a solo Wizard. I've died there about 20 times now. Are there any places where a Wizard can solo and get good decent exp?

Finally, when you die, do you only lose exp and some constitution points? I think I've realised that my dexerity has gone down...?

Thanks and please get back to me :)

Oh, sorry forgot to put this question in. Is it possible for a Wizard to gain a lot of levels in a short time? What I mean is, if you are lvl 10, is it possible to get to lvl 15 in one day?
And yeah, I know you can if you play 24 hours non stop, but I do have a life ;)

casters have fairly poor armour by definition, if you want good armour you should start a tank :)

as for focus staves, look in the area around your trainer, there's bound to be stave merchants nearby..

But don't mobs drop them? I've heard you can get great focus staves by killing mobs that may drop one.

Yes but they're not that common. Best is to buy one that has a focus for your spec high and other two lower. For example at L9 a good staff would have 12 focus so you can use it up to L15 or so.

You should try to walk in yellow/blue armour. It doesn't matter that much as you, in theory, should never be taking hits when fighting. Armour with stats might sometimes be worth keeping when fighting mobs that you can kill off with high percentage before they get to range.

I think dungeons majorly suck for any casters so you should try finding some blue/yellow mobs outside so you can get enough range. Good targets are ones with low HP (casting mobs) and mobs that stop to cast some offensive spells (not many of these around).

You can get a lot of levels as caster, you just have to find the right mobs (as with any class really). It will get slower esp. at 30 and at 40 soloing comes very slow.

When you die you do lose constitution yes - but go right click on a healer who'll give you it back... for a small fee. The first time you die per level you lose one point of const, then second time you die you lose two points - any further deaths you will lose three points. Once you ding and get to the next level though you will again only lose one const the next time you die and so on.

Your dexterity does not go down when you die - possibly a cleric or friar had cast a dexterity buff on you and you lost this buff when you died.

Your dexterity will also go up one point every second level you gain and make your spells cast slightly faster.

When you die you also lose xp - when you release your corpse and return to your bindstone (ie. there was no cleric or friar near to rez you) then you lose even more xp, but you get this second xp loss back if you return and /pray at your grave.

In a similar way to constitution losses, the first and second times you die per level you will lose less xp than on the third and subsequent deaths.

Hope that helps ;)

Might be you have removed a magic item too, that had +dex on it. Or some item has degraded to that point it does not give the stat enhancements think its 80% con or something. :)

It can be very difficult to find good staves that have equally good focus levels, especially in the old world dungeons. :(

In fact, most of them are shite. :)

The best place to hunt for good focus staves is in the SI expansion but the problem is that certain mobs tend to drop specific things. For example, Drakoran Leechers may drop tank equipment (I say 'for example' because I don't know what they drop) and Drakoran Sawbones may drop cleric stuff. Having said that, I have no idea what type of mob would drop level 10+ wizard focus staves. :)

The best way to get a good staff is to find a fletcher who will make you one and then get it spell crafted. If you ask the spell crafter to put 3x 20 focus gems into your staff it would only set you back 4g and you could use that staff well into level 20. You would need to get it repaired before it goes below 70% condition though or you will lose the magic bonus on it.

Hope that helps. :)

Drakoran Elementalists seem to drop caster staffs, i've got some really got ones off them (although only really good for Cabalists atm).

Also Sodden warroirs drop a lot of chain and 2handed/pole weapons.
