2 sides, 3-4 capture points, 1 team defends the other attacks, it takes different amounts of time to capture a point. If you cap all points within time limit you win (if you defend for time you win)

It encorages teamwork cause you get a few points if you are near a point when it is captured.

You also get slightly improved accuracy when near your teammates.

It can be an infuriating game. For example, if one team is working well together and the other isn't, then to the first team FLF is great fun because they feel that their teamwork is enabling them to win, which of course it is; but it is demoralising for people playing on the other side.
Like any public server game, you can't force people to play properly. So even though they're on the attacking side, its not unusual to see players sniping from their own respawn or running off to deathmatch somewhere.
It only takes two or three people who know what they're doing and work together to run riot over a team of individual players.

When both sides are evenly matched it is a great game, and easier than most to be good at from the word go.
If attacking, stick with someone who seems to know what they're doing/where they're going.
If defending, try and find a cap point, and defend it. Sounds obvious but if you do that, you'll do far better than running around, stumbling into groups of enemies.

cl_teamicons 1 is useful, as it puts arrows over your teammates.
Also bind a key to show the cap point status, theres no point running off to a point thats already been capped.

It's set in the modern day, with fairly realistic weapons (I'm no gun expert). You get to respawn if you die, unlike CS, with varying delays depending on class and map.
Each side takes turns attacking and defending, usually two or three times per level.

From what I've seen CS players find it harder to adapt than TFC players. Mainly due to the lower damage caused by the weapons.

By "low damage", i think he means there's not many "one shot kills". The guns seem pretty similar as the ones in TFC with regard to how much punishment people can take...
