I'm just going through the (painful) process of formatting and rebuilding my Laptop, and it got me wondering if these new fangled Firewire HDD enclosures are any good?

The Firewire port on my SB Audigy is large wheras the one on my laptop is very small.

I've seen a nice 2.5" enclosure for £88 which just needs a 2.5" HDD the

My questions are

Has any one tried them?
Did they like them?
Whats the deal with the different connectors?

Thanks :)

I have a Lacie Pocket Drive connected to a Firewire port on my Windows XP machine. The Lacie has a USB and Firewire connector, but the advantage of the Firewire is that no external power is needed to power the h/drive, and the throughput is 400Mb/s as opposed to 12.

Not quite what you're planning, with the enclosure thingy, but it's a 2.5" drive in the Lacie, so must be similar logic.

The different cables are 4 and 6 pin connectors. The 6 pin is for the h/drive/scanner type peripherals, where as the really small 4 pin is used for digital video connections.

A mate has been looking into a firewire drive. He figured it was cheaper to buy an all in one unit rather than the enclosure then the HD

Oh, and the Sony Vaio range has a Firewire port that uses the 4 pin connector, but is called an S400 port - this needs external power to run. Other laptops by the big manufacturers have this smaller 4 pin connector too.

Lacie make fantastic Firewire drives, we use the 160 gig versions at work, they are fast, and quiet as anything, huzzah!
