A few questions:

As I will be getting my new computer soon I will need to get a firewall up before I connect to the internet? As I heard I can be infected within minutes of being connected. If so, anyone reconmend any firewalls etc which I can get to stop this? I wouldnt like to get a virus straight away :)

My dad has a norton anti-virus programme, would this do the trick?

Thnx in advance

you will get infected within SECONDS if you venture online with protection.

if you have XP installed on the machine..enabling the built in firewall will go someway to helping you. THE FIRST thing to do online...the FIRST!!! is to head to windows update..and spend hours downloading and rebooting untill ALL updates have been finished....sprinkle in some random virus scans..followed by 2/3 FULL virus scans once you have done all that updatng. once ALL that is done...scan for spyware.

(restart your machine in between scans ie..scan virus/spyware...restart ..scan again)

follow this guide and about 6 hours after you get your shinney PC online..it'll be rdy for trouble free use LOL LOL LOL

dammit i love the web..honest i do..no..really...not jokin...

IMO. download ALL the critical uppdates from windows uppdate and burn them to CD and install those

yes ur gonna have to use a few cd's for that. but its in my humble oppinion the safes way of doing things..

or atleast all the service packs for whatever OS ur gonna use... and download the most upp to date AV and FW u can find and burn those to.

(doesent matter if its just a trial AV/FW just have something better then whats in the OS. until u get the "real" things installed.

and dont plug in the network cable when u get that new PC. install all the stuff u burned first.

Heres my tip, download the Zone Alarm free version www.zonelabs.com and put it on a CD, then do the same with AVG free anti virus, www.grisoft.com .

On bootup, make sure your internet (network cable for cable modem, USB for ADSL, Modem cable for dial up) is disconnected. Install the 2 peices of software, reboot, then connect to the net and download all the MS updates, including SP2 if using XP.

Are Zonealarm and Grisoft the best firewalls/protection about?

both will do the job..in my personal experience i prefer avg for being less of a system hog whilst doing it's job..and ofc being free.
