No doubt other people will be able to better advise you, but it seems Zone Alarm is a good, free firewall for Windows. In the mean time, if you're using XP, try enabling the integrated firewall until you get something better sorted out (Control Panel > Network Connections > Right-Click on the Appropriate Connection Properties > Advanced tab).

Kind Regards

dunno if its the way my system is set up but zone alarm (being my firewall of choice) seems to slow my start up quite a bit.

Ive got a problem with Zonealarm (latest version - shareware)

If zonealarm startsup with the PC, no other windows will open (e.g. windows explorer, internet explorer, dialup window) until zonealarm is shutdown. Then everything springs to life.

So, remove zonealarm from the startup, let system startup, then start zonealarm - seems to work better for me.

I was using Tiny Personal Firewall as a better (IMO) alternative to Zone Alarm, but they have made it purchase only now with the latest version for Windows XP.

I needed an AV package and got Norton 2003, I ended up buying the Norton Internet Security suite which includes their Firewall and I was mighty impressed.

Windows built in firewall is little more than a port blocker, the real security is needed with blocking individual program access to the outside networks which can only be done with a third party package.

Just to show how paranoid I am I also run a Linux router/firewall as well :)

Just tried a few different online scans and apparently I'm all stealthed up  the joys of having a router with a *nix machine in my DMZ :D
