Firewall Problems!

I have recently moved into my new University accomidations, and to my horror I have been unable to get into DAOC. I am pretty sure this is due to my Unis firewall. I spoke to someone outside the Uni, my uni guide says no help will be given for online games, and he told me there is a way of 'burrowing' through the Unis firewall using winsock proxy. Does anyone know how to do this, or have any other ideas? All help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Urughai!
I am in exactly same situation as you are. Unfortunately, using socks (like SocksCap) won't work. You can thank fcking radarist, since 1.68 Mythic implemented code that blocks DAoC running when you have sockscap active (famous antiradar protection). Unfortunately, DAoC itself does not support proxy (any kind of it) so you need SocksCap-like software to get it working.
Only way how to get through Uni firewall is using Virtual Private Network (although I was not yet been able to confirm this theory, alas there is nothing that could prevent it from running)... You'll have to talk somebody or use your home computer as VPN server and your Uni computer as a client. Software installs you fake network card that will be then used for communication over forbidden port ranges (UDP mainly).

Yes, a VPN would solve this kind of issue - if the VPN tunnel is allowed through the UNI Firewall that is. It would also have the added benefit though, that the UNI's admins couldn't see you were playing games on the dorm. :)

The problem however is, that your VPN's servers line would have double the traffic load as it would just running DAoC in itself (Traffic: UNI->server + server->GoA).
Other disadvantages would be that you would have an extra overhead (slower computer) from encrypting the traffic). With a fast computer that may not be a concern though. Also... you would actually have to do a pretty knowledge demanding setup - something which requires quite the research and effort to do proper.

Good luck though, and do tell about your experiences as it seems many people have this issue. :)

Hehe, press it through some of opened ports. 443 seems to be good choice since it is most likely the port that won't be used on 'server' computer and 99% probability it is one of allowed ports on uni firewall (it's https port).

That's very true. That's the reason I can't run VPN server from my home computer - it has very fast connection, but 2gig per month limit. It fits with normal DAoC traffic (approx. 60MB per day playing), but double rate would be pain.

You'll have same trouble with sockscapturing and honestly you can hardly play DAoC on computer that would not handle VPN load easily.

Well, advanced user should be able to set up the VPN. And... you have to admin you'll be much more happy if you success than if it was so easy.
Want it "easy" way? Explain Mythic their noobish anti-radar did not hurt radarists, just players behind firewalls.
