I and a friend both using Firefox are wondering it there's a way to change the default character encoding for webpages which do not define it.

There are quite a few sites which, where the char encoding is not defined, display a <?> graphic where some symbols (such as £) are supposed to be.

I'm thinking that setting a different default character encoding might be a handy way to fix this, and more effective than writing a gazillion stroppy letters to webmasters :)

Or I may have got the wrong end of the stick, in which case I look forward to being educated. ;)

View > Character Coding.

Make sure auto-detect is set to off, then go to customize and choose the ones you want.

Bugger. I'd got it into my head that it would be a settings file edit...

*shame*

Thank you though :)
