Can anyone recommend a good (and cheap!) tool for doing household budgets and tracking spending? I really need to start doing something like this. Ideally I'd prefer some web-based or at least something I can sync between my desktop PC and my iPad.

Why do you need something to do it? Just write it down or use excel?

As said by ileks, software can't do the main requirement; active logging.

Just use your mail etc to sync it.

I use account tracker from the iTunes Store. I think it can export data but I don't bother. I just use it to actively see what I'm spending and make note of my bank balance.

mail?? are you a fucking caveman?

There will be 50 apps out there that will talk to your bank and allow you to tag purchases etc. Find one of those and it'll sync over your phone and any browser etc.

Tracking spending? Good lord how working class!

;)

The working class track their spending because they have no money. As a proud middle-class man, I merely need to measure my spending so I know how guilty I need feel when watching those charity ads on telly :)

Built my own years ago using Excel, Different worksheets for different accounts and Loans/Credit Cards. I keep it in my Dropbox so I have access to it everywhere and update it as and when. Makes it easier to see how much money I have in the future.
