Valve rekon that using steam to update your cs and hl files will be easier and faster, I think they just want as many poeple using steam as possible before they make it mandatory. Your choice, its worth it just to play the 1.4 beta, but when it comes to d/ling 1.4 and 1.1.0.9 I will be using the ftp's of BW, Jolt or BY as they usually have the files on slightly early.
