Hey guys.

I'll be joining you all on Final Fantasy XI soon (once i install the game).

Looking at being a Thief, then a Ranger character, is this a good class to be? (I was a Scout on Dark Age Of Camelot, so i'd like to keep to Ranged combat) so which race is best for a Ranger?

Best be off, cyas all soon (Going on the Bishmark Server).

rangers are the one of the best damage dealing classes, as black mages and monks will do more damage at certain levels/on certain mobs. It is however a slightly costly job though.

for rangers (imo) it doesnt matter so much as ranged accuracy (or the stat agi) is what is most needed and at later level the difference between high agi race and low agi race wont be to important.
highest str race is elvaan (which is the stat for damage done) with galka as close second (galka also has slightly higher agi+dex), mithra is race with highest agi and dex, but lacks some str and hits (hits is off course not to important for damage class).

in FFXI you can have a subjob, which basically means you take a secondary job besides the one you use, which is capped at 50% of your main job and you get stats and abilities of the secondary job (all abilities except for the 2 hour and dont exactly know how much stats transfer, but basically have a high str class as subjob and you will have more str than with a low str class as subjob).
Anyway reason why i (badly and briefly) explained subjob is because rng(ranger) mainly uses warrior or ninja (and ninja you need to be 30 with a job and have done a quest before you can use it) as subjob. So if you are planning on going rng, might be best to go warrior first.

If you arent sure wether you will go thief or rng than go for the high dex+agi mithra or all average hume if you want to be able to play a male(for thief dex is important as that determines its sneak attack damage (an important ability of the thief)). Atleast imo

If you havent really understood how jobs/subjobs worked, sorry couldnt be bothered to explain it all right now, as for me (and I am rather bad in explaining things:p) it would take a while to type out how it all worked (assuming you know nothing) and then what your choices are as rng:p.

Sub job for thf or rng = Ninja.

Dual wield is win.

except war will do more damage per hit for rng and at later levels you might have enough accuracy to not bother with dual wield. And the tp you get from dual wield as rng isnt that much, so it isnt a reason to go for it. The extra slot for stat boost is though, but do you want to miss out on the war's abilities to gain it dunno.

Ow and until lvl 20 atleast war is better and not before 30 will ninja be the better subjob, atleast till lvl 50-60 where a rng will get enough rng acc that he might not actually need the extra rang acc.

NIN sub for RNG is not only about dual wield.

But I agree, WAR is definitely a great sub for RNG too.

another reason to sub nin is the blink,
good as a dmg buffer so you can take a few hits in combat.

And great for pulling.

Allso dont worry about doing more dmg with war,
you will get aggro fast enugh when you try anyhow :p

nin is the better sub, minor drop in str than war, but this is good, a ranger who does too much damage will die, rng is all about hate moderation so the difference between war/nin is nothing because rng hate control is about how often you use your ranged attacks.

It will also protect you during pulls and if you are being tricked off occasionally.

The dual wield is not there for the 10% bonus ( at 25 ninjas get 10% delay reduction ) so rng gets this at 50.

Its there for the stat boosts from dual hawkers ( +10 racc on each ).
