This should be an awesome year for films. In no particular order, films I will be wanting to see at the cinema are:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Hitchikers Guide
Dark Water
Unleashed
Sin City
The Chronicles of Narnia
Hide and Seek
The Amityville Horror
Fantastic Four
Assault on Precinct 13

All looks rather promising. Which most likely means I'll be horribly let down, and end up all jaded and bitter.

Ok, your turn - anticipated films of 2005. Go!

Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
King Kong

/edit also

Kingdom of Heaven
Xmen 3

(those are just the hollywood blocksbusters. quite a few excellent indie films this year too)

And finally:

His Dark Materials : Northern Lights.

I don't hold too much hope for this due to the amount of material already cut.

Don't you find it depressing that there are three remakes in that list? Assault On Precinct 13 in particular just annoys me. The original was so of its time (OK I know it was itself a retelling of Fort Apache, but it had its own stamp), and it just doesn't make any sense in a modern setting - in the original they were cut off from communication; my first thought on seeing the trailer the other night, was, "so no-one has a mobile phone?". Bah.

Personally, Sin City, HGTTG, Batman Begins, and of course, Episode 3 are the biggies (I know he'll f*ck it up - but I also know I still want to see it). I'm also looking forward to The League of Gentlemen movie (I think they're calling it Royston Vasey now) and Clerks 2.

Casshern, I know it was released overseas last year and still doesn't have a release date for the UK but I still really want to see it before this year is gone.

Apparently the Assault on Precinct 13 isn't all that bad of a remake/reimagining/whatever.

btw Dagaffer, there are at least 4 remakes on that list ;) (Dark Water was a Japanese Drama/Horror released a few years ago, assuming of course that was the one you missed :))

Oh, I know, its remaketastic. Burnt by the likes of The Ring remake, then rejuvinated by the remake of The Grudge, appalled by the Ladykillers, but then encouraged wildly by Dawn of the Dead, I'm still a tad cautious when approaching remakes. However...

Dark Water has a great cast in it, Jennifer Connolly, Peter Postlethwaite, Tim Roth.... so I'm optimistic that it is an intelligent and loyal reworking.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - whats not to love about Tim Burton rejoining forces with Johnny Depp, and also indulging in the darker side of Roald? It has the potential to be superb.

The Amityville... well, I'm, not expecting much beyond a few jumps, a swarm of flies, and some Eeeeevil, but that's enough for a good night at the cinema.

Assault on Precinct 13 looks to have a good cast, and be an enjoyable film, and I do like Gabriel Byrne. It could have a STOOPID plot though - maybe they'll use that old trick of blaming no mobiles or weird events on "sun spots"

Hitch hikers guide - well, I love the series, but its about time Mr Adam's dream was realised on the big screen, and the casting so far sounds superb.

The Chronicles of Narnia - I never really liked the BBC version. It suffered from Stagnant Plummy Stage School Child Syndrome (or annoying shit casting as its more commonly known). Plus I'm dying to see what WETA can do with this.

I wouldn't pay money to see the new Star Wars film. I might pay money to poo in an envelope, and post it to the script writers, but even then I'd worry about losing copyright in case it turned up in a later Lucas work.

In no particular order and based on that Empire list, as I tend to lose track of what's coming out when, I'm looking forward to:

Aeon Flux
Serenity
His Dark Materials
King Kong
Batman Begins
Sideways
The Magic Roundabout
The Life Aquatic
Constantine (although I fear this is going to be absolutely terrible)
HGTTG

Remakes will go out of fashion soon enough. They are just a bit fashionable at the minute. And they are by no means a bad thing.

What I find more depressing are sequels. I know I have mentioned one but xmen is one of the more enjoyable franchises.

What's this about then? *hopes for something even vaguely Byzantine connected*

Tim Roth....

Just the other day I was wondering what ever happened to him. Thought perhaps he had just given up making films or something. Great actor.

Oh. Dear. God. I just checked out that Empire site. Nothing at all do with any of the various Constantines of history, some feeble plot with a starring role of Keanu "Interesting" Reeves. The guy couldn't act his way out of Damini's envelope, and he'd be very at home with the contents.

I haven't seen the last of the matrix trilogy, but will be watching it on Sky tomorrow whilst keeping myself awake with Tax Returns. Probably the only way I'll manage to get through it, unlike it's predecessor which had me snoring in the cinema.

Its based on the (very good) Hellblazer comic, but it replaces the main character from the comic (a cynical blond scouser with cancer - set in the UK) with FUCKING KEANU REEVES and places it in LA. A travesty I tells ya. (Goes off to post "worst casting ever" jibes in a ComicBook Store Guy stylee)

I'm sure I read somewhere that Keanu will have a special Hellblazer-mobile or something and that Chaz is going to be replaced by some jive talking youngster (note in the comics he's almost the defacto image of a London cabby).

Bah!

I'm just glad Preacher seems to be stuck in development hell. Hopefully it'll never get made.

Ha. Ha.

Instead of watching it, you could do this. Take a trilogy of books you like.

Read the first one, and savour it. Relish that excitement you felt at the prospect of re-emersing yourself in that world in the continuation. Marvel at the way it subverts reality, and creates a plausible alternative world as a contrast to this one.

Then read the second one, but tippex out anything that might actually resolve a plot. Wherever you find a reference to the initial world of the first book, replace it instead with the word sausages, and change the genre of the book (perhaps just by drawing capes or breasts on the front cover). Leave just enough intact to preserve that initial feeling of hope that this is somehow redeemable.

Then take the third book, and piss on that hope right now. Just bend over and piss. Then throw the book into a shredder, with a copy of The News of the World, and The Fortean Times. Pick out random urine soaked words at leisure, attach them to wasps, and then throw them into your eyes.

As the police once said, "Mam, it's better if you don't look. Keep her in your mind the way she was, not like this."

Not like this...

This thread started off promising and turned into shit within 5 posts.

C'mon guys. Inform us of all your excitment for 2005 and none of your futile moans.

We want to know what films to see and what not to see. What we don't want to hear is "whine remake. Whine Tom Cruise. Whine Peter Jackson"

Excuse my intrusion. :)

While the Matrix sequels certainly didn't live up to the hype, or build well on the first, they were not bad films.

Watchable and still in my DVD collection.

To keep Leggy from moaning more:

Xmen3, Charlie and the chocolate factory and potc2. And I have hardly glanced over that empire list. Looks like a lot to look forward to.

Pfft. It completely lost what made the original Matrix superb, and even worse, couldn't understand why. It's like Lucas not knowing why including Midiclorians was so inherently wrong.

Good point, I forgot about King Kong, really interested to see what Jackson will do with it.

I am sure you are right! :) However a friend says it's the best thing since sliced bread with a very deep and complex plot. I'd be surprised after the second film which was utter crap, but I am going to give it a chance... Whilst working.

But moaning's so much more [whine]fun![/whine]. King Kong is also a stupid idea. There, I've said it. Although it might be redeemed by having Jack Black in it.

OK. being positive, I'm looking forward to seeing how they make the Fantastic Four convincing; this has got to be one of the biggest CGI challenges yet.

Yeah, which kind of confirmed my thoughts about how challenging it is. Ben Grimm didn't really look right (not big enough for a start), and you didn't actually get to see Jonny Storm properly, just a fast meteor effect rather than a 'Human' Torch. Set and costume design looked pretty cool though; they've gone for a bit of an X-men movie look rather than classic FF but it looks pretty good.

I agree with you about King Kong Gaffer McGaff. In principle. But it's peter jackson and if I hadn't seen what he did with lord of the rings then I'd be more sceptical myself.

I have complete faith in him to do a good job.

Cannot wait for Hitchhiker's, though I'm really worried what they've done with it.
Potc 2
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Very Long Engagement - yup it's out already but I haven't seen it yet so to me it still counts. :p
I heard somewhere they're making a film version of The Last Unicorn, which I'm also waiting on news from.

And what's this about His Dark Materials? Are they actually making them into films?
