File Recovery Programmes

Can anyone reccomend a good FREE file recovery programme?

My hdd blew up yesterday, and dragged everything with it to oblivion.

ALL my documents (no back ups, yes I know, I KNOW!!).

Kenny tried a free programme which recovered some odd bits, but very little and nothing I actually wanted. Then tried one that recovered everything pretty much, but is holding it to ransom unless we pay for the programme.

Help anyone?

There are companies that specialise in this kind of thing, you might have to get them to retreive your stuff.

There are none free about that I have found, however there is a program called "EasyRecovery" which I used before - works bloody well.

I'll PM you a "trial" link.

How can I put this tactfully.

The program that is asking for a registration fee, well, you could give it *pretend money* via a dodgy website.

Damini,

I found a relatively good "Free" program called Directory Snoop on the ZDNET (www.zdnet.com) website.

Allowed me to recover a WAD of stuff.

Good luck!

Publisher's Description
PC Inspector File Recovery is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems. Finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged (does not work with the NTFS file system). Recovers files with the original time and date stamp. Supports the saving of recovered files on network drives.

Sort of - we do computer investigations at work, and we use a similar tool for the initial investigation (Disk Investigator) and if a criminal offence is then suspected, then you have to use a tool that collates the evidence using one of two recognised tools (Vogon/Encase) which cost tens of k's ! You'd be amazed at what these pieces of kit can find - even from a formatted hard drive !
You can't hide your goatse !

Depends...if you write over it with lots of 1's, then lots of 0's, then lots of 1's etc etc.

The more you do it, the more advanced the file recovery programs have to be to read the data.

Failing that, I'm sure sitting a huge magnet on your HDD while running it might help to hide the data.

or you could break it up into little pieces, freeze it, unfreeze it, set fire to it and then drop the pieces into the atlantic.

That should make it pretty unreadable

A friend of mine "in authority" *ahem* had some "issues" with the contents of his drive and found it wise to use a wipe tool on the drive repeatedly for days then stick a huge magnet on the drive for a day or so and then he microwaved it until his microwave expired and then he dismantled the drive, smashed the platters with a large hammer and distributed the bits in public bins across town over several days.

Now that might have worked I guess.

He could have just thrown it into the nearest river.
