Welcome to the Photocomp number 21 judgement thread! Comp #21's topic was People

Please declare your vote in a clear manner, eg, <user> - <pic number> (seriously)

If there is a need for discussion of any kind other than photo-technical, please use a different thread for that.

Voting may continue until Monday 21:00 CET, or until a clear majority has been reached. In the event of a tie, I will judge.

A very standard portrait style shot of my daughter taken a couple of weeks ago in fairly low light at the Eden Project in Cornwall. She never normally stays still enough for a photo, but I thought the longish exposure gives it the real soft focus look.

#1 - Ghosts on the dancefloor

This is one of my shots from my sister's wedding during the ceilidh. I left the shutter open and then bounced the flash; the bloke right in the middle of the shot must have stayed perfectly still the whole time - I found it a bit amusing.

...and here's a photograph I took a few years back, surreptitiously, of a tired Spaniard on a train leaving Barcelona in the early evening. Shot on film, ISO400 IIRC, quite dark in there so I had to boost it a little.

Taken Dec. 2008. My nephew organised a music event here in Qatar and this young lady was one of the guest DJ's. She wanted to do some modelling for her calender and i just leeched a ride with the pro photographers with here. I ahve fiddled with it a bit on Lightroom.

Hmmm milou's pic is the best, but there is something about big g's ghosts and Tom's old spanish geezer.....

Tom's spanish geezer gets my vote!

Big G Ghosts. Although it was a close thing with Tom's old man which imho is a news magazine quality shot, but as mentioned, I think you already entered it in another comp.
I had a plan for another shot, but no time to get it done when conditions suited. I still plan on giving it a stab though and the warmer evenings coming up will help me...

(Thanks for the vote Jup. My effort was literally a snap, rather than a composition so I'm glad someone liked it :) )

Tom's old man.

As an aside, is there some rule that says you can't enter a pic in multiple competitions if it's suitable for the title? In this instance it's a bootiful photo and just because it's been entered before (if it has - I only latched onto this competiton about 8 months ago) shouldn't detract from the quality of the shot.

I'm going for Gumbo's. (The phrase "Tom's old man" does conjure up a certain image).

i really like the one of mrs milou. its is b.e.a.u-tiful. however, i feel that tom's sleeping spaniard is more appropriate for the topic.

Osssshttt I dunno about this one. I've got two in mind - Milou's Isaac and Tom's old man. Milou's shot is brilliant, technically awesome too, but Tom's candid shot really captures a moment in a (presumably) non-staged way.

Additionally, kudos for shooting film, so it gets my vote! (Ps, constructive criticism, I think it would work in B&W?)

Tom's old man.

I like the framing on Tierk's shot, so that gets my vote.

Woo you kept that one quiet G. What are you doing (or have you done so far) re: lenses? :)

It came with the 15-85mm EF-S USM which is supremely sharp being their latest EF-S mount standard zoom - focus is fast and accurate, build quality is good but not 'L' quality (so it's not weather sealed either). That'll do as my standard walkaround / holiday lens. I've sold my Pentax 17-70mm to get the Sigma 10-20mm in Canon mount (my favourite for landscape) and will invest in the 70-200mm EF f/4 USM L and 50mm EF f/1.4 USM eventually.

Good stuff. I've only experience the the 70-200 and the 50mm, both of which are great lenses.
