FFA League Maps

First of all, thanks to all the admins for running the league so professionally, everything went smoothly and I had great fun.

I just wanted to raise the issue of the maps again though. Attendances the other night were far better than previous leagues with the result that DM6 was just far too small for the number of peeps involved. I think this really removes the skill factor, myself being a very good case in point :).

I had terrible connection woes that night, got disconnected from the server early on  . I had terrible trouble reconnecting, went back to IRC where I was told by Athena NOT TO PANIC!, before trying one last time which was successful. I joined the fray something like 5-6mins after anyone else & had 4-5 999's after that, but still managed to finish 3rd out of 11 with 90 frags!!! This had nothing so much to do with skill(because I was on the same map earlier on getting praccy with 5-6 others & I sucked royally :D), but the fact that it was possible to go on 20 kill rampages with nothing but your machine gun. Basically I feel I had no right to finish 3rd the other night, and on a larger more spaced out map I probably couldnt have, given the late start. In fact, I could have done even better had I not started with such a pissed off, "whats the point now?" attitude.

Now I know attendances were higher than expected (murphys law I suppose) but it is not too late to change the maps for the next rounds. DM6 was way too small, with total machine gun carnage at the p/g & r/l. I expect the r/l rooms in DM7 will be just the same. DM8 will be a total joke. You just have to go on the Demon FFA servers to see that the stock ID maps are not intended for more than 6 people, maximum.

So what about it? Anyone else feel this way?

Admins, any plans to change the map rotation?

Cheers

I'll discuss it further with athie as whilst the large show outs were good and well done to everyone who made it, it did cause a few problems in certain divisions from what athie said (and a few mails we received too).

Unfortunately some of the larger maps that we considered also contain the BFG, tho i guess we could turn it off with OSP (i think).

So, whilst we have no plans to change this weeks map we will consider changing them for subsequent weeks.

Ta bigfoot for considering it. I was sure I was not the only one who has commented on it.

You are right though to avoid the BFG maps!!! That would be ludicrous with 11 players.

Quorthon thanks for your comments. I appreciate some of the maps may not be ideal and I wish there was a simple answer. We have established DM6 and 7 are perhaps too small yet we can't determine exactly how many people will turn up. There is a possible solution I am considering and that's to split Groups 2 and 1 into smaller groups. These 2 Groups have a higher percentage of people turning up. However I need to spend time on working out how this would affect the league overall, prizes etc.. If I were to do this to Groups 1 and 2 then I can only see some kind of play-off situation arise. This is but players would have to agree.

TBH I don't think there's many FFA games where luck doesn't come into it 80% of the time, it's just the nature of FFA. Classic example on DM6 funnily enough (which I did badly on in the BWFFA!) on Demon the other night; over 10 players on two occasions, same LPB/HPB ratio. I win by 50 odd frags in one game, and by only 5 the next, with 4 of the last frags coming by fluking the quad!

What I would suggest is that weapons be permanently available (aka weap stay). That way there's less machine gun lameness going on, everyone can grab a weapon, and it would make for more entertaining games imo. Part of my problem last week was playing with an RA3 mentality! Damn that mod! :)

Has anyone converted Q2 map "Wulfhere" yet? Class FFA act.

What do u mean by groups? Do you mean divisions? or the whole group of divisions eg group 2 = 2a + 2b +2c ?

If you mean the divisions is gues you fall into the same old problem. Say my div, 3c for example. 11 of 13 players turned up which was at least 3 players too much for DM6. If the division had been split into 2 further divs eg of 6 & 7 players respectively, as murphys law would have it, the 2 no-shows would be from the subgroup with 6 players leaving only 4 players to compete!!

I fully understand therefore that you are in a catch 22 situation as regards map size. Also, I can imagine it is quite difficult to change the divs now that week 1 has already taken place.

What about having a provisional map, dependent on the number of players turning up on the IRC beforehand?

Cheers

hehe...I dunno if I am cut out for this higher level of ffa. I died the least in 3b and killed about 20 more than I was killed. this made me the joint most efficient player in the game but placed me 2nd from bottom :(

Kills: 77
Deaths: 52
Sui: 5
Eff: 58%

The winner on the night died 96 times but killed 126. Admittedly he killed lots but feck me I probably fragged him more times than he did me. Sorry I don't see skill come into throwing your self into the game like this.

I will try and adjust my playing style next week to PYSCHOTIC but don't own deaths come into this at all?

not aimed at anyone, just annoyed at me playing well but ending up being almost bottom of the table already :(

lo Jizzy m8,

This was exactly my point, you see while I was happy to finish 3rd after all my connection woes etc I really had no right to and if it were down to pure skill and efficiency I wouldnt have.

But you better get practising that psychosis because dm7 is going to be chaos on thursday night :D

Best place to "experience" this form of deathmatch is to join the demon ffa servers. They have 16 player limits on the stock ID maps ! U wanna try dm2 with 16 players :)

Best thing to do is keep the fire button always pressed !!!!!! You would be surprised how many kills u can rack up with a machine gun like this - when there are so many players involved, there are lots of geezers with just 10-30 health runnin around, so keep shootin' from the minute you respawn!!

Yeah, holding down that fire button is definately a good idea in FFA's with 10+ people in. Another tactic I like is to switch to gauntlet and run around in ever decreasing circles in the "busy" rooms. You'll be amazed how quickly those little humiliation icons light up. :)

Seriously tho', I don't think anyone really goes into an FFA with this many people in and expects pure skill to win. You've got to accept that there's gonna be a load of machine gunners and plasma spam because that's how FFA's designed to work. It's a bit of a laugh, I find tho'. It makes a nice change from regimented TDM games (Not that we've played many in a regimented style) :)

Cheers.
