Few Problems concerning XP + Counterstrike

Well, as i said yesterday i installed WinXP, and ive noticed quite a few problems in and around Counterstrike...

My first problem which i have now sorted (i think) was my Mouse would be sluggish, so it would be hard to aim / move round corners quickly, but i found a few commands which seem to have done the trick.

Second problem is, when im playing Counterstrike, my FPS starts off stable at 85fps, but during the course of the game it will shoot madly down to 20'ish-fps, which did not happen when i was on Win2000... ive looked at guides but non seem to have done the trick, im on DirectX 9 and 30.82dets.

My final problem (i think) is sound, in Counterstrike (or anywhere for that matter) sound seems a lot deeper and sharper, im on the latest SB Live! Drivers... again its pretty much the same options i selected for when i was on Win2000 but nothing has done the trick.

My current spec is:

Athlon 1800+
Abit KG7 Mobo
256ddr 2100 Memory
SB Live 5.1
Geforce3 Ti200

Another problem i guess is when im out of Counterstrike, my computer slows right down, as in, not working at all, i have to reset my computr for it to work. I have put that down tho to not having much memory...

you must have something wrong with your pc gray. Whenever you are on I hear this annoying whine and it just seems to go on and on. It only seems to stop when you leave. Weird.

Well theres always an "ignore" button if you have a problem.

Anyway, i believe i sorted it... i had Hardware Accelleration turned to max on my Soundcard, but i put it down a notch and it seemed to be OK....

and PS Lester, not me OK? Sure some maybe down to User Error but ive seen in the past other people complaining of the same errors its just i didnt find the post' relating to them

1) bugger about with mouse acceleration and increase sensitivity within cs. I found that with XP the mouse is slower and I had to increase most settings.

Dx9 works fine for me and has no effect on frame rate whatsoever. I am using the very latest Dets though which you aren't...try them

The sounblaster issue is so common I don't know what to suggest. Download service pack 1 unless you have a dodgy copy of XP in which case will has posted a patch in the hardware forums which allows you to use Audigy 2 drivers with this card and solves most XP probs....i'll dig it up.

I have no problems with xp and CS tbh.
I did read that dx9 lowered benchmark figures considerably, and the people reporting this said "oh but thats no problem, benchmarks are bs anyway".
Heh maybe they arn't :)

Benchmarks aren't related to the performance issue he speaks of.

3dmark is optimised specifically for dx8 so it makes sense that dx9 will reduce the mark you get.... it is all bullshit however :)

He is having real world issues that are common with XP.

I had similar problems with CS in XP. It's finally sorted now.
Had to turn off sound acceleration in dxdiag and add
-noforcemparms -noforcemaccel
to the command line.

I also found sniper rifles to be really unresponsive, but fixed that by putting zoom_sensitivity_ratio to 1.5

DirectX shouldn't affect CS if you've got it on OpenGL mode.

If you haven't got it in OpenGL mode, you should have. :)

oo err my first post on bw:)
sg, i get the same problem with xp with my pc grinding to a halt.
clueless to y it happens but if u go into task manager u'll probably see ur page file usage is high (under 'performance'). if u go into 'processes' and then end the ctrs.exe all will be well.
cs is the only game i need to do this for but if i dont nothing runs.
anybody any ideas? noone else seems to have the problem so it must be my set up.
well, it's quicker than restarting anyway!

Well this is what i did, and it seemed to improve my game alot (as in back to normal type)...

In control panel click on "sound and audio devices", click the audio tab and then the "advanced" button of your Sound playback.

Click the performence tab and (i had mine set to "full" before) move it one notch down to standard.

It seemed to improve my fps (as in now i get solid 85fps) and also my sound is back to normal... the game doesnt judder anymore.

Welcome fishter :)

I have a mate who's page file is ridiculously high and was wondering what it could be. I checked the processes and nothing seems to be using much memory and there are no active windows open.

The problem is that his 2GHz p4 is slower than my work 450mhz p3 :/

If anyone can help please do.

Ta.

p.s. I'm about to format his HD soon...so please hurry :)

Would be true if OpenGL handled sound, but it doesn't. That's still handled by DirectX.
