Farriering

Just wondering if anyone is a Farrier or they know someone who is ?

A Farrier is someone who shoes horses and makes there shoes etc.

I wanna become one and i've sent off some applications for an apprentiship. Just wondering what I can expect, as yes I would like to become one!

My uncle is a farrier, my family are all very horsie.. except for me, but I decided I would take an apprenticeship with him when I finish uni. The money is fucking excellent but your saying about the horsie girls, dont go there! Been out with a couple girls from my aunties stables and you are always like number 3-4 on their priority list behind:
1) The horse
2) riding the horse in comps. etc
3) cleaning up the horses shit at 5am every morning

They are obsessed! Doesnt work well unless you want to spend alot of time down the stables and enjoy that sort of shit. Im like a fucking outcast in my family because I show no interest what-so-ever in horses
edit: When you become more skilled in the profession you can take up other things such as blacksmithing my uncle makes one off pieces, last thing he made was a big farm gate with all horses and such on it took him like 1 week of his spare time and sold it for 7k ><

All your clothes/hair/skin will stink of burning hair/hoof.

If you're happy with that, not scared of being kicked by a few horses, then I'd imagine its a pretty good job - get to travel around, meet new people, a bit of outside work, reasonable cash.

Farriering is one of those businesses that work by word of mouth and reputation. If you really make a good effort, and ensure that your work is as good as it can be, then you will be turning work away - a couple of botch jobs and you could be having to look for a new career.

Prepair for a bad back after a few years. It puts alot of pressure on your back shoeing horses, especially with a horse that doesn't want new shoes.

I've had very little experiance with horses but currently the horse we have atm is a bastard at lifting his feet up. If I can get his up then I can get any horses up, thats how bad he is

My mother is also becoming a Equine Massarger(sp on both?) so she knows all the theory behind it and i'll know the practical. Which in the long run can be good as we could start up our own company
