What does perkele mean? It has been stuck in my head for the past few days and I have no idea where I've picked it up, but I think it is a Finnish swearword of some sort? :p

Its used as a curse word if im not completely incorrect. If someone kicked your balls and you exclaim "Perkele!!"

Yes, it's one of the most powerful swear words used.

You know, where in english it might go from;

Damn
hell
goddamnit
fuck.

In Finnish it goes a bit like;

Helvetti
Jumalauta
Saatana
Perkele

It's all the hard R's in it.

Perkele in itself means devil, where saatana is satan.

But perkele is a bit more harsh then devil, like the ultimate evil one, where devil is piru in finnish :p

It doesn't have a good translation to an english devil synonym.

Shouting "perkele!"(per-kele), loud and strong, with a hard P, strong R K and L, will let everyone know that you're well pissed off.

EDIT: If someone were to kick you in the balls, you'd more likely to shout "jumalauta", which more means anger towards a person or an action, where as "perkele!" is more used to convey annoyance.

First time i've really thought about it in technical terms, something you can't really teach :p

When it comes to sound Dutch cursing > all.
When it comes to what is actually beeing said, anything in or near the balkan (Croatian, Turkish, etc) > all.
