Basically, this is what happened. I was in game running two accounts after just putting a proc on someones armour piece. The only other thigns runnign were MSN and kortsd SC calc. All of a sudden I get booted back to the desktop and at the same time, all 4 of my USB ports reported an error and my sound manager came up with some strange error about 'flexline' which actually made me chuckle at the time.....

My sound then jumped to 50% and after finishing what I was doing in game, I logged out and restarted my machine. The USB ports were dead and so was my sound. I noticed winamp was giving a specific error code so I decided to google it and up came a forum of people with the same problem. I scrolled to the last posts and everyone was saying 'wow, cheers, it works!' so I looked through the post to find who had posted a solution.

Enter Regcure.....

After downloading this program which was advertised as 100% free (and it installed 4 other programs without asking by the way) on the website and was given great reviews, I ran the installer only to find that after a 10minute scan, I still had to buy the bloody thing. At this point I was fuming. After 3 hours trying various things to fix this, I made a critical error of my own. I decided to try and search for a serial code for regcure and the first webpage I went to, up came a mighty stream of viruses.

My instinct reaction was to quickly hit the reset button and unplug my internet cable but it was too late. On pressing restart, a black screen was all that awaited me.

I decided to leave it for the night but deep down, I thought it was all gone. When no beep comes up to even acknowledge anything has loaded up, you know there's something big wrong. Going to the computer shop next door, the guy in there said it was probable that it was my motherboard and wanted me to bring it in just so they could charge me £50 to look at it then however silly amount for a new motherboard (which they would then fit for another £50).

I'm not one to give up though. I went into the university computer suite and started looking up what I could. I simply created a start disk, put a bios reset file on it, found out I had to press ctrl+home to boot from this disk and crossed my fingers.

This didn't work.

It turned out, when I unplugged both of my dvd drives, I got life! All it was was a blown dvd drive afterall. Even my USB ports and sound seem to be better now.

So now I am back in windows after learning a valuable lesson. I'm still not clean of viruses (getting pissed off at norton) but it's better then a black screen :)

Not completely sure if I'm going to be able to make it for this weeks guild group as I'm still working on cleaning it but it's looking a lot more hopeful already.

cause your tic is speced in the 'flexline' i can see the humour in that

i guess you didn't update your virus definitions? although norton sucks donkey bollox... any way...

as im sure you are awear, norton doesn't do anything for your registery, witch now adays most anoying virus's use... i suggest you get ad-aware, it stops register modifications, making it hell of a lot easyer to remove virus(although i guess it cant help you now:p)

hope you get your comp fixed soon dude:) gl

PS. im not sure if its free, if you need the reg email me, and ill *try* to dig it up for you

Had norton updated on the 15th of november. Windows updates were all done, my firewall was still running and I hadn't downloaded ANYthing for the last week. I also run through the buildings hub system which has security of it's own, meaning really, if norton was doing it's job, this shouldn't have happened unless this was a brand spanking new virus :(

Ran liveupdate, installed it then ran norton in safe mode and it still didn't come up with any viruses while at the same time I'm getting 'critical system failure' messages.....lol

Had adaware a while back but it had annoyed me by installing other rogue programs along with itself so I removed them all. Gonna get it back now though as I should have a while back. I'm just happy I've got a screen up :)

my motto is, its better to be unprotected than to depend on norton...

ive had my fare share of virus's over the years... NONE were detected by norton, cept 1... when it tryed to get rid of it, it was still there...

also, ignorance is bliss...

Right, update time. Had another lil scare whereby windows decided to not load up but I fixed that.

Down to just 18 adaware faults, sound is working, USB ports are working...just need to get a new virus scanner. If you had of asked me a few days ago, I would have defended norton as it's always done me proud. But even 1 error in the 5 years I've had an internet connection, the fact that it was potentially a computer destroying error, it can't be overlooked.

Am on MSN for the time being, just doing the finishing touches and I should hopefully be able to make it to the guild group so don't replace me just yet! :D Will let you know for certain tommorow.

Maybe I'm crazy and I know I wasn't thinking like this 2 days ago but in a funny way, I've kinda enjoyed doing this, learnt a hell of a lot and found I'm better with computers then I thought I was :D Every cloud has a silver lining etc :)

Imo AVG is THE best AV prog out there. Since I've had it I haven't had a single virus get through. Of course this might have something to do with the fact I have Zone Alarm Pro (Firewall) and Ad-Aware Pro on here too :p

Still, the only program worse than Norton is McAfee. So get AVG :D
