Have heard about a lot of "hacking" attempts via IP's derrived from IRC channels. There is a simple and effective way of preventing your IP being shown, without the need for a shell account.

This applies to Quakenet

Add to perform, or type in status window:

/mode <nick> +x

...where <nick> is your IRC nick-name, without the brackets.

/whois before
JoBloggs is <userid@router.isp.com> * Jo Bloggs <-- DODGY!!
JoBloggs on #straightlove
JoBloggs using *.quakenet.org QuakeNet IRC Server
JoBloggs is authed as JoJoJo
JoBloggs End of /WHOIS list.

/whois after
JoBloggs is <userid@Qlogin.users.quakenet.org * Jo Bloggs <-- SAFE!!
JoBloggs on #straightlove
JoBloggs using *.quakenet.org QuakeNet IRC Server
JoBloggs is authed as JoJoJo
JoBloggs End of /WHOIS list.

(Just a random example above - won't look exactly like that.)

This will prevent a DNS lookup on your hostname, thus hiding your IP.

You will probably have to be authed with Q to get this to work.

Hope that helps - suggest you all use it.

just use a firewall and dinamic ip addy ^^

I'm not suggesting this is a replacement for a firewall...everyone should use a firewall (try ZoneAlarm), but this is an easy and quick measure to prevent DNS lookup on IRC.

You'll need to be authed with Q on quakenet tho, in order to use that.

Code:
/msg Q hello

Zonealarm will only protect you from Denial of Serivce attacks, but if you have recently updated M$ win, then its only annoying because it will prompt each of your progrs once to permit or deny it from net, but none of the firewalls can protect you flood based attacks, it can just log it.

hiding ip address is really important on irc, but there are several more ways to get it, like dcc chat, dcc filesend, or ip can be get threw msn, icq, skype too, or even your address can be logged from a website too.

I don't remeber that if i ever wanted to get an ip and i haven't got it.

Best protection is to use a linux firewall with iptraf. In iptraf you can see if someone is nuking or flooding you and then you can attack back :flame:

A good hacker who knows his/her (& yup there are many female hackers out there! :p ) *stuff* can get your IP from IRC with no probs even when masked.

Same goes for firewalls, a hacker will have no problem bringing down or bypassing your firewall to gain access to your pc.

Most viruses (the more clever ones :p ) are coded to take down known firewalls & therefore are programmed to SEARCH for for IP's hiding behind firewalls... to put it bluntly.. Firewalls ATTRACT viruses :p ...im not saying dont use one, because that would be dumb as every second your ports are probably probed 100's of times by "script kiddy" viruses which your firewall will do a fine job of :)

Back in the days of *uber* 56k i used to run a program that would bounce back incomming threats, this was a nice tool to say the least for the nubtard kiddys who would try send xxxx amount of packets to try disonnect me \o/

what im saying is...if a hacker knows what they are doing (not some muppet who goes to <insert url here> to d/load a kiddy script) then they will gain access to your pc no matter what.

& the info in this topic is good for any noob to IRC as it will stop nubtards trying to be clever wit noob scripts :)

All this might be true. But I don't see why a 'real hacker' would find your or my computer interesting enough to even try.

Please....ZA is the biggest piece of shit there is on the firewall market. Working for a ISP I would say about 90% of the problems related to firewalls is caused by ZA. If you want a firewall get a real one or a hardware FW. :touch:

Edit: What the heck does this have to do with RvR?

Well I won't say anything speciall cause then you will only blame me if something f***s up. But I just wanted to hand out a warning for zonealarm cause my experiance of that program is all but good(Sure we got clients that uses it w/o problem but we see alot more of that FW causing problem then any other FW I know)

indeed but there's the whole principle of "escaping from lion" at work here.

I don't need to be faster than the lion, just faster than the guy next to me.

Sygate pro is a decent s/ware f/wall, although it can be fiddly to setup for a novice if u have a network, but imo a good fwall.

Norton on the other hand, is a pile of shit that causes more conflicts/problems with software than any other f/wall ive ever used, not to mention it chews up resources in the background.

im just using sygate pro & h/ware one thats built into my router.

If you dont want any virsues...dont use the net, simple as that tbh.. Virsues been part of the net since the net began & sooner or later you WILL get some sort of virus, could be a harmless (but annoying one) or could be one that can damage some of your hardware, thats the net 4ya tbh.
