Have heard about a lot of "hacking" attempts via IP's derrived from IRC channels. There is a simple and effective way of preventing your IP being shown, without the need for a shell account.
This applies to Quakenet
/whois before
JoBloggs is <userid@router.isp.com> * Jo Bloggs <-- DODGY!!
JoBloggs on #straightlove
JoBloggs using *.quakenet.org QuakeNet IRC Server
JoBloggs is authed as JoJoJo
JoBloggs End of /WHOIS list.
/whois after
JoBloggs is <userid@Qlogin.users.quakenet.org * Jo Bloggs <-- SAFE!!
JoBloggs on #straightlove
JoBloggs using *.quakenet.org QuakeNet IRC Server
JoBloggs is authed as JoJoJo
JoBloggs End of /WHOIS list.
(Just a random example above - won't look exactly like that.)
This will prevent a DNS lookup on your hostname, thus hiding your IP.
You will probably have to be authed with Q to get this to work.
Hope that helps - suggest you all use it.

Add to perform, or type in status window:
/mode <nick> +x
...where <nick> is your IRC nick-name, without the brackets.
