Going to twickenham with our lass on the 26th August for the rugby league challenge cup final. CLosest hotel we can get is the london hammersmith. Any one know what the area is like for amenities (sp) etc? Nice places to eat/drink? Rough area?

Not really my area is Hammersmith..but yes it's a bit of a shit hole. I'll ask my dad when I get home he knows the area quite well.

Best avoid Twickenham its self for drinks and head into Richmond... Orange tree is always lively on Rugby Days.

The area not exactly what you would call rough and dont expect to get much change from £4 for a pint.

Hammersmith is a ghetto. Tbh your better off staying in somewere like Kingston/Surbiton Bus runs from Kingston to Richmond every 10 mins. Then you can follow the crowds from Richmond to the Ground.

Just spoke to a lad in london who says Hammersmith just needs a good clean, but is safe enough and some nice places to drink etc. Is this true?

Hammersmith has quite a few decent Thai restaurants (try Blue Elephant), loads of Indians (restaurants), Chinese etc. Pub-wise, there's a mixture of dodgy old-men pubs and trendier places. Think The George has just been refurbished.

I went to Hammersmith not long back to watch Thin Lizzy. I must say, had a great day. People were very friendly, had great food in some pub (can't remember which) and found the best Indian Restaurant that I have ever been in (again I can't remember it's name).

The only thing we found was that many pubs did kick us out after serving us just one round. Found this a little extreme as although we were making a lot of noise and generally messing about (12 drunk metal heads do tend to get a little boisterous), it was all harmless fun, the pubs were quiet at that time of day and we weren't being obnoxious or rude to any customers that they already had in there so I did find their attitude in that respect a litle disappointing.

Anyway, to sum up: good place, friendly people, quite a few pubs in a close proximity and some tidy places to eat (if I could only remember where). Beer prices reasonable for London, although we were told of 1 pub that was charging £5 a pint (obviously we avoided that one :p)

Thing is with places like Shoreditch Brixton Hammersmith there are some very nice parts (mainly were they've been redeveloped with loft conversions etc for city types) but two street's away luck some right shitty parts.

Would definately head to Richmond for pre match drinks though (which is were everyone heads pre match). Easy Tube journey from Hammersmith too.

Link is some top ten list of Bars Pubs pulled of the net.

Watching 30 fat blokes huffing and puffing their way around a pitch, dropping everyball that comes their way and having to endure the game being stopped every 30 seconds aint my cup of tea im afraid
