Can't say i know much about hostels as i live here 
Funny misconception that, but anyhooters; http://www.stadionhostel.fi/cms/?ca=tervetuloa&lang=2 for example is right next to the stadium which isn't too far from the citycenter and at 20/night not too shabby. No idea on quality.

There's another searchy enginy thingy. The railway station(around the middle there) is as central as you can get, though -any- place really is close to the center because of bus, metro(subway) and especially tram lines that run like clockwork.

Yeah, "kind" of at the opposite sides of the centre.
The location part(if you choose the stadion one) shows how to get to the hostel from airport and also how to get to the railway station.
University there;

7A and 7B tram(as on map, little blue dots) take you closest to the university.
When you choose a hotel/hostel, i can get you "closest" route to the university, but even from the railway station(easiest to find) it's a 1-1.5km hike to it, so it's not like it's london size here
