i got my first BD, twas a troll BD at the Arvakr raid, u just got to kill the commander first, then him, then he has no pets.
Alternativly if your lvl 50 nuke hits for more that 200 dammage on a high orange (i was 43 at the time) you may consider just going for the BD but you will need to kill him fast.

bds are pretty scary, but if you hit the dancer with a mes it'll probably get all the pets, even if the bd resists, then nuke his ass off
also with mids poor spirit resists could quite possibly just nuke the bd away, but i'm guessing interuptions from the pets is the problem here

Since when did mids have poor spirit resists? a hell of alot of alb nooks are spirit so you really think we gonna run round with 2% spirit seeing as we can choose our resists now

thats the subtle beauty of being a troll BD the pets follow you just outside standard mez radius (350) or so i've been told, at the end of the day it all depends.

Did the player behind the BD panic?
Was he/she specced for the insta lifetaps? (incidentally i think the recast timer on those should be increased and i'm a mid )

At the end of the day There are loads of variables that can effect the turnout of a fight. I'l bet you could come up against an identically specced BD and find yourself getting the shit kicked out of you before you've notched your 1st arrow
