OK so lately I have fallen into the dark pit that is FB, been tempted over to the social side and all that and have something like 14 friends...but they all have loads of friends and while nosying about at other people's photos I noticed a rather disturbing trend.

Is it a law or something that while posing for your FB photo you have to hold the camera up above your head at arms length and pull a goldfish face and then change the resolution to black and white? I think maybe the people who first started this thought how wonderfully original they were being but now everyone is doing it! I even had one guy at the library the other day printing out his CV and HE had a 'arms length above head, goldfish pout' photo on his cover letter!

Another thing I've noticed is that people go Ooh great I'll 'friend' you on FB (like for example several people from the BBQ I went to) and then they never speak to me or reply when I send them a message :( so I was wondering is the main purpose of FB to actually communicate with or just to others?

I don't want to offend hardened FB users by actually disrupting their solo discussions with such things as messages and comments when they have spent a great deal of time concocting these intricate monologues, I mean that'd be just rude of me.

Am rather disheartened that now I have assimilated myself into the borg cube that is face book I seem to speak with my friends less than ever...

Help and inform me of how to use this social networking tool please Freddys because for me it is more of a social notworking tool...(see what I did there?)

As a teenager, its great - because it helps you communicate with your mates and have discussions over parties/get togethers etc etc, - it is responsible for organising some quite huge events - the main objective of facebook is for you to obviously keep in contact with people you knew in the past - but with the 'older' generation, it's not as good, because people clearly don't want people they went school with to nose about their life as you said.

Friends reunited comes to mind with the horror stories of people having affairs etc..

As you can clearly see - its good for having photo's - you CAN pick people who can look at certain albums etc, so only that person can see that photo.

Apart from that Facebook's great, but its just deeply addictive :\

Oh yeah, another pointer - its good as you said, for the BBQ - When I go to parties, and I find a person that I get on with, I add them on FB so we can communicate further, it's alot easier than saving their number etc - I only add people I know, or have known, I don't have randomers :)

tbh i hardley use it, iv'e only added about 3-4 people ever, only have like 100 friends on it (tho nearly all of them added me which makes me smile inside)
i check it alot to see peoples status' cos some make me laugh and mainly i use it like a forum and post random shit on peoples comments ect just to take the piss

i don't think iv'e ever usefully used it really and 90% of my FB friends are in my phone anyway, so if i wanted them i'd text them.

that is called a myspace pose. and yes, many people feel popular by their amount of FB friends. And why would you need to talk to your friends when you know everything they do everyday cause they feel the need to updated every little movement they do...

thats facebook in a nutshell

People are using FB for different purposes. Some people just want to spam, some want to play the FB games (Farmville, Castle Age), some want to advertise something, some want to chat.
I mainly use it to stay in contact with my former co-workers and some friends. But I also play Castle Age, that´s why I have like 200 "friends", although 90% of them are on a special list, they can´t see what I post, can´t see my details etc.

Mine is mainly old work or old school friends i have very few of my larger group of current friends on it as they hate the place. I mainly use it to chat to people i don't have on my msn so the inbox for the most part. I cant follow the status of people as it normally makes my life seem pathetic.

It wasn't invented to keep in contact with old school friends at all. It was invented for Students to keep in contact with each other / oraganise events etc.

it should've stayed that way.

I said this in another thread a few days ago, I find that i used to add friends and then never have any contact with them. I only have 60 odd friends cos most of the requests i get, i ingnore, because they are from firends of friends, people who i might say 'alright' to within a group of mates, but ignore them walking down the street, or they are people i went to school with....25 YRS AGO!! Never spoke them then and dont wnant to speak to them now, hence i had a cull the other day of about 15 'friends' that i never speak to

My boss asked me the other day if I have an FB profile. He sounded surprised when I told him that I didn't. When I asked him why he was interested, he sounded evasive.

I reckon my work have unofficially started monitoring FB profiles of employees.

Facebook is great if you control your privacy settings well, only let people see what you want them to see, and only let close friends see all your awful pics etc :)

Like Ch3tan said, as long as you control your privacy settings you can make sure you only see what you want and stop people from seeing everything on your page. Some of my mates use FB all the time to arrange meets and greets, which is a pain as I don't check it every day so sometimes I miss out, but my GF is on it all the time, so she will tell me if there's something that need attention. I find it useful to catch up with people who I haven't spoken to in a while. The strange thing I find is that I will open up my Hotmail after being to a party or pub and see a load of emails from FB saying I have been tagged in pictures, it is annoying, but I like to see pictures of me (to satisfy my vain side)

Facebook by and large is full of self indulgent cretins. If I wanted to know what somsone was doing every 15 seconds I'd fucking handcuff myself to them.

Sick of the constantly stolen poetry and philosophy bullshit that morons cut and paste from somewhere and stick in their status so other wankers comment about how true it is, fucking plebs. Sick of the people who have a disagreement with their partners and feel the need to stick it straight up on facebook along with tagging the I am single again option, only to change it back 3 minutes later.

Aside from all that it's perfect for keeping in touch randomly with friends who are living miles away.

I signed up 4 or 5 years ago to see some pictures and spent the time after that trying to get the damn thing to stop spamming me endless friend requests from people I have never met and 'play this uber game' from people that are no longer my friend (because they kept spamming shit at me).

I actually tried to quit once but even when you close your account it isn't actually closed.

It's now open but I think everything is turned off as I've not had a mail from it for about 6 months.

{edit} BTW I never knew about this 'black and white goldfish' picture thing - I thought that it was de riguer for all photos (esp. of me) to have the subject looking utterly hammered (whether in my own pics or someone elses).

You can disable email notifications.

And Genedril, you've been able to properly delete your account for well over a year now.

Heres what I see as most of my 200 odd freinds break down to:

30% sign up, get about 40 freinds then never bother to log in again
20% sign up and become a freind to look at the photos of some tart whos nearly got her baps out in a random photo that appeared on my profile, only to find the full size pic shows shes a minger with an orange tan and never log in again.
25% play games, why oh why I dont know, I get better games on my ZX spectrum emulator on my phone. Those people also dont seem to socialise.
10% are old school/ college/uni/work mates I havnt seen for years, and are usually so dull I couldnt be arsed with anyway, but they have photos of totty I dont mind looking at.
10% do talk to each other, organise piss ups and partys etc, post interesting things that I can relate to and do socialise with outside the hinterwebs domain.
5% are celebs, real ones (my boss was in a small band called Hawkwind many years ago, you might know them) and he passed me their details, and some are rather good fun to see chat to!

I lock most of mmy profile down to outsiders, but ppl do get the chance to add me, but Im fairly fussy about who and what. Most of the people I have on my list have something interesting at some stage, but most fade fast and stop using it....rather like DAoC, they come, they play, they move on..

I didn't have a facebook page till I joined the Army - once I joined it seemed to become as good a way as any to keep in contact with mates who get posted off to the other side of the world :)

I just use it as an "every now and again" thing where I'll post a few comments when I'm a bit bored.

I think the trick is to not get too involved in it, not to take it too seriously :)

Maybe I should shut it down again but now that I've disabled everything from sending to me it doesn't bother me half as much as before (out of sight and out of mind and all that).

yeah I kind of wanted a B2 free zone, somewhere I can post comments & pics as new single Ez. I do see your point about using it to organise events and things on and quite like it...it's a horrible time sink though and when no one has posted anything interesting I feel the need to stay logged in 'just incase' someone does something funny.

The chat facility and messaging are good though just for little conversations ...mostly about tv shows and food lol

The wife uses it daily and has 100s of friends, workmates and kids she teaches which I'm always telling her not too.
Ocasionally I read her stuff and just cannot believe the level of conversation
'I've just ate a jam sandwhich..yum...yum',
and that comment gets 20 replies from people I vaguely know and previously though weren't complete imbeciles.
Some just post '***** likes this'

99% of FB users seem to be using 90% of their cranial capacity just to breathe,
And many of these friends are teachers with degrees.

There was one thread and it had like 50 replies pointing out that something was spelt wrong, so I added a comment about spelling Nazis and the thread stopped, the wife came home and said everyone had told her I was weird.
