Explorer

Jesus fucking wept, I'm utterly sick of Explorer not doing as its cunting well told. Every time I manage to customize Explorer (running a link from my Quicklaunch) to display how I'd like it (a window of <so big>, not maximised, no status bar, etc) and apply the "like current folder" setting in the hope it'll fucking well stay, it tells me changes will occur next time I open them.
But it doesn't.
Fucking great, am I doomed to have a functional yet irritating file viewer?

Anger!

Someone fix it, or point me at a ludicrously obvious thing I've overlooked. In every version of windows ever.

(Does XP fix this? I'm still running the non-fischer price version - windows 2000)

Never had any problems here kez, although I'd strongly advise against installing XP.

Well, this has never caused any problems for me, except the size, which I don't particularly worry about anyway. I'm in 2k as well btw.

I use Opera 6.01 there are about a thousand reasons why it is better than IE.

Though sometimes some sites will look strange using it, but it's well worth it in my opinion.

Kezbert - I use XP and Windows Explorer behaves itself perfectly well; remembers my preferences for each window. XP also has many more (customisable) templates for window types which you might prefer given you clearly want things your way.

CageCunt - shut up about XP... You used it for three fecking days...

Yeah, I should shut up about it really, just I have some very lame friends who praise it on a constant basis without need :)

On a similar tangent, how much space is required for an XP install? my Windows hard drive is a measly 2GB and currently residing on it are Windows 2000 and Windows 98. Should the space be adequate, I'd like to kill win98. But that'd mean deleting the folder & editting the boot menu thingie? All sounds like rather teneous work to me.

Windows XP demands at least a Gig to actually install. If you don't have that free space then it won't even try. Difficult to tell what it runs at, but to give you an idea, my Windows and Documents and Settings folders (excluding my own data and installs) come to a snatch over 2GB. That's including 200MB of System Restore data A clean install would be considerable less, obviously but that's what mine is running at.

I'm quite surprised about it. :/

The Minimum requirements states 2.5gb, but i'm quite certain it's not that much.

Shouldn't be much bigger than w2ksp2, although you'll definately want to disable the shit system restore thing.

It's not shit. It's a nifty feature, much improved over Win Me implementation.

As a warning, my XP install has bloated to about 2.5 gig.
That is after removing the backup files from the Win98 update. It does however, allow for 256 meg cache enabled for "hibernate mode" and also running and extra user account for other family members.

It is quite large, but not really an issue on modern chunker hard drives.
