I've decided to go for a run each lunch time as i just sit on my butt all day in front of a computer. I play footy once a week but i wanna get a bit fitter.

Started today and borrowed a little thing my dad has that count steps when you are walking and tells you the distance. I went for a run round the block which took 11 minutes, was 1.5 miles and i did it in 1644 steps.

Anyone in the 'know how' of whats a good distance to cover and for how long on a daily basis? Burnt 70 calories as well apparently.

Walking briskly for 30 mins a day is enough to cut the risk of heart disease. Have a google for it, lots of subjects on it.

10'000 isn't it a day?

Apparantly thats the minimum number of steps walked in a day that a person should do....

But to be properly excercised you need to get your heart rate up and keep it up for a certain peiod of time. Could be 30mins I'm not sure

well i guess running 1,500 is better than walking them so i just need to go a little further. i'll do it everyday. Also play 5-a-side for an hour every week as well so thats gonna help.

That's what I heard too, my girlfriend did a 10km run a few weeks back and her step-o-meter thingy showed over 22,000 !

My personal preference is using a rowing machine, I think it gives better all over fitness, takes less time, and not as dangerous as running the streets where I live. A good rowing machine is not that expensive either.

Exercising while sitting on your arse sounds like cheating to me :D

Swimming is supposed to be amazing exercise. Great cardio-vascular workout, and uses a LOT of muscles in your body.

Running can actually have a negative effect; it is good for cardio-vascular, however the repetetive impact on your joints does damage. I'd suggest swimming, cycling and rowing for all round fitness exercises.

Hey, I like to run also to keep me fit for playing rugby. I also started with road run like you soon after breaking a collar bone. In attempt to get fit again I started running :) This not only burnsfat, builds stamina but also tones.

I try to run every other day with weights session in between which my club pays for :)

after my injury I had lost a lot of stamina and started with 1.5 mile jogs like yourself for the first two weeks. I then found after this I could do 3-4 miles and on occasion 6. Now I can do less due to the sun :(

Just build yourself up over time and have rest in between days. Never weight train everyday, always allow rest. Eat and drink lots of good things :)

I cycle every day I can, more or less the same route, just under 5 miles a day.

If you're going to run, run on grass. Better for the joints.

A perfectly good thread which once again descends into either "Im gonna talk about the subject of exercise but also put in loads of references to how cool/fit/rich/sexy/superb i am"

Or

Repeat exactly what is said before, just change it slightly.

Just change slightly what has been said before and repeat it.

Mountain bike! Get fit by hurling yourself off the handlebars in local woods. Just got back into it and bought a £2k Specialised enduro expert

I guess you have showers at your work then, or the area around your desk is kinda quiet now in the afternoons...?

DMW, what's the matter with you? If you don't like a thread, stay out of it, or at least take part in some way, even off topic and humorous is fine with me. It's just starting to get boring now.

i would disagree. me n a mate who goto the gym both use a treadmill. we do 15 minutes where i walk and he jogs. we do the same calories, sometimes i do more from walking. but ye, your heart rate is higher when you run, which also helps.

yeah, walking or running a mile uses the same amount of energy; like you say, running is better for getting the heart rate up, increasing stamina and your cardio-vascular system.

When I play golf I try to walk as briskly as possible and in this heat the sweat is pissing off me with my heart in my mouth. Brisk walking makes me feel so much better.
