EVE: delayed until 6 May 2003

I just started playing the beta phase 6 and its looking like a good game, just mightily buggy and crash prone right now, looks like it does need a few more weeks to iron them out.

Anyone else in beta and playing ?

Warning: remember comments are still under NDA, keep to general opinions please.

I think the March release was to steal Freelancer's thunder, but they are actually entirely different games, it's like comparing WW2 Online and Battlefield 1942.

Any chance of an EVE subforum ?

It's novel to have an MMG with impressive graphics, yep.

I haven't managed to formulate an opinion yet. I think the game has a lot of potential but they definately made the right choice postponing the release.

I'm in the beta, have been for a while and it has improved quite a bit since previous phases, not sure if I would buy it though, guess ill have to wait until the end of the beta and see if I still feel the same way.

You realise this will actually be a subscription game ? The game itself will probably be a free download.

possibly, but you still end up paying for it one way or another, I made the mistake of buying Everquest and then paying a monthly charge (which I cancelled after a couple of months).

I know this is nothing like everquest, but I have yet to find a MMORPG that has satisfied my gaming needs, guess I just have a short attention span and get bored easily :)

I signed up for the beta and got my invite, but TBH I think i'll wait till its properly finished. Had bad experiences with beta's before, the worst is when you get hoards of people just playing it for the free ride and early viewing. The majority of these people not really understanding the concept of a beta, and spending most of their play time whining like a cat with a broomhandle up it ass.

Mind you saying that, take a look at the DAoC forums it dont change much. I played Earth and Beyond beta and was more than unimpressed, put me off for good really. If I had started now, it would probably be different. The game would be polished, all the bad points ironed out and lots of nice 'candy' features added in, maybe I would get into it.

Problem then is you get all the complete nobs that like to go round bragging that they have been playing since beta -10 and try to amaze you with their l33t knowledge of all, and how they could kill you with a thought IRL.

To quote the Simpsons, "Can't win, dont try", just play Freelancer instead tis really cool.

The people in the Eve beta actually seem pretty neat. I logged on once and found myself in the middle of an argument about the possibility of faster-than-light travel and exactly how it'd work. They all seemed like pretty decently intelligent, and oddly coherent, people. And yeah, just from the little time I've been in it, there've been marked improvements and progressions and is becoming noticeably nearer being a finished product. Or something equally vague. NDAs scare me.

Oooo so its like Elite but online?

It goes further than that, but that is the basic concept.

EVE is designed to eventually have a player controlled universe, so demand for goods and trade prices is determined by players not by some invisible AI, even the manufacture of ships and equipment will eventually be done by player run corporations, and most missions submitted by other players rather than NPCs.

Just as long as I can attack a space station, and wait at the docking hole for the cops to come out, blasting them with my cobra mk2 mining lasers!

If it's anything like EQ I'm sure it'll be hugely successful :)

If it's anything like EQ I'm sure I'll start hating it pretty soon. But it's so pretty.

Elite was fantastic, I dont know if Eve will ever recreate the feeling I had when playing Elite, I may buy it anyway though.

You may do this.

Unfortunately the cops are the last thing you'd worry about.

Someone, somewhere will have a bigger ship than you and will be signing up on a "bounty hunter" mission with your name as the target, so prepare for an ass-kicking galactic style.

And if you attack a corporation owned station they may have a very big smegging battleship or two who'll come looking for your bottom to poke a few nuke missiles up it.

Sounds good to me. Part of the reason why I love NS so much is because of the 'conquer all the map' type play. I always loved empire-building games, and this one sounds like a biggie.

Can't wait...

BarryCorp

I've opened #BarryCorp on stratics.frws.com for those BW folk in the beta. You don't actually have to join the corp - just a place to hang for the moment.

I applied to be a beta tester. I doubt they'll call me, but such is my enthusiasm for these games....
