Taken off Camelot Herald:
Change the language of the game
You know that it is possible to play on every Dark Age of Camelot European server, and with the arrival of the Spanish and Italian servers, some might wish to try to play on those new servers. Let's remind you first that it is of course requested that you speak in the language of the server. The ideal is thus to have a game interface in this language. If it is just for a one time try, you can connect with a game in your language, but if you plan to play regularly, it is highly advised to change the language of your "client" in order to avoid some identified anomalies (impossibility to pay your rent, to climb walls for stealth characters etc.).
OF course, this applies to all those who play on Camlann where it is preferable to play with an English interface.

Here is the process to follow to perform this change : In your game folder - Dark Age of Camelot : Catacombs, TOA or Shrouded Isles- open the update.dat file with a text editor (textpad or just notepad). You will find there the 3 following lines : Mythic Patch
patch.camelot-europe.com :1280/updates/english/catacombs/mpatch.dat
patch.camelot-europe.com :1280/updates/english/catacombs/mpatch.dat

If you play with Trials of Atlantis version :
Mythic Patch
patch.camelot-europe.com :1280/updates/english/atlantis/mpatch.dat
patch.camelot-europe.com :1280/updates/english/atlantis/mpatch.dat

If you play a basic version (DaoC + Shrouded Isles) :
Mythic Patch
patch.camelot-europe.com :1280/updates/english/isles/mpatch.dat
patch.camelot-europe.com :1280/updates/english/isles/mpatch.dat

You just have to replace the current language with the one you wish (french/english/german/italian/spanish). Save the changes then launch the game. A message will ask you to relaunch the patcher which will then update the language files (a 18 MB download each time).

Note that if you want to keep an install in your original language (or if you play on several different language servers), it is possible to simply copy your entire Catacombs, Trials of Atlantis or Shrouded Isles folder first and then change the copy as above thus leaving your original install intact. You will however need to make a new shortcut for each copy to quickly launch the game (right click on 'camelot.exe' and choose 'send to' then 'desktop (create shortcut)').

Do not forget to answer the poll soon since it will stay online until next Friday only. See you next week, have a nice game !

Note that this only changes the client language, all server messages will still come to you in the language of the server.
Also as noted in the news you should play with a client that is the same language as the server otherwise you will encounter problems ingame - can't climb walls, pay rent, perform guild commands, reply to /send etc.

its really only the fact that you cant reply that is really annoying.

requiel, these small differences seems like very bad programdesign, just because the server/client is in another language, game functions shouldnt be different, flaws like this makes baby jesus spit blood :(

It's the difference between a program that was designed from the outset to be localised and one that has had localising added afterwards.

Let's not forget that DAoC was one of the first games of this type to be translated from English into another language. No-one knew if it would work, whether there'd be a market for foreign language MMOs. Mythic designed for an English playerbase and were persuaded to try opening it out. Unfortunately by this time the basic design was already laid down. After the success of European DAoC, other companies and games have seen that it is a viable market and I'd expect all games in development now and those to come to include a lot more localisation support. Short of rewriting DAoC from scratch however it's not something that can be easily added to an existing game.
