Esso Super Unleaded

Dunno if anyone here has any clue on this...

Last time I checked my local Esso garage sold "Super Unleaded 97 RON". When I went in there yesterday its been rebranded, no longer says "97 RON" on the pump and is just called "Super"-something (I can't remember exactly what).

When I asked the attendant (always a fountain of knowledge in garages) he told me that it had just been rebranded and was now 98 RON.

I can't use 95 RON in my car, so the fact its no longer marked 97 RON worries me slightly. Anyone have any info on this?

:m00:

What worries me even more, esp. as a new driver, is that there is different types in the first place?

I just head for teh green pump marked "Unleaded" and fill her up.
do I need to be worried? :|

Different fuels have different "additives" which gives different performance levels.

Your car may run better on different fuel types.

Sometimes you may need to change the fuel if your car has been tuned for high altitudes and you then drive to the coast...

I think its mainly for old cars as newer cars seem to handle any old fuel at any altitude...

No, you're thinking about the octane of the fuel. Old engines are intended to be run on 5 star, which is the octane rating. Obviously, modern leaded petrol is 4 star, and now you can't even buy that(at the average garage, anyway), so you have to put in octane booster things, and lead suplements... Allthough they could be the same thing, i just don't know :(

Dunno what this RON stuff is, though.

Lead Replacement you mean. Lead in petrol is now illegal in the UK (and the whole EU I think).

Went into an Esso to get my fill
Da doo RON RON RON da doo RON RON
Wanted 97 on my little bill
Da doo RON RON RON da doo RON RON

Ah bollocks, the sooner we get nuclear powered cars the better, none of this super-duper under-leaded 97 star crap, just change the whole engine every 100,000 miles.

Or you can just use cooking oil.

Optimax is not a higher 'ron' than Super Plus, not in the traditional sense anyway. Ron is a measure of how 'explosive' the petrol is. Hence high performance engines use it. An example of this is Honda VTEC Engine. The honda s2000 and civic type-R use the same engine. The civic runs ron95 fuel and produces 200bhp the s2000 uses ron98 and produces 240bhp.

Get yourself a Cadillac Seville STS, Northstar engine has 100,000 service interval :)

Handles like a small wooden spoon in a large vat of custard though.

What he said ^^^

Highly tuned engines that would otherwise use normal unleaded with no problems, need higher RONned fuel to avoid pre-ignition, without retarding the timing to the point the engine runs like a bag of shite when not stressed.

In other words its not going to make any difference what fuel you use if you are going to the shops and back unless you take a detour around a grand prix circuit

Well, that all depends. If you have a chipped Turbocharged car and you stick the lower octane fuel in you'll be fine, so long as you don't wind it up.

But say you want to overtake someone on the way back from the shops and you plant your foot, the turbo spins up, the revs rise you get a little 'tinking' noise from under the bonnet, then 2 or 3 seconds later you get a phenomenon known as detonation. It's not as bad as it sounds initially, basically it's the mix in the cylinders going 'Bang' as the pistons are still going up. You can do it a few times but it's very bad for the bottom end of the engine as you can imagine.

Chances are though, on modern cars that require the higher RON fuels, they'll just run pretty shit and underperform, as they have so many electronic widgets stopping things like detonation occuring.

Exactly.

I simply can't run 95 RON fuel in my car because of this. If I ran 95 RON (normal premium unleaded) on a regular basis my engine would die a death pretty quickly.

Kryten - soz if I caused any confusion - most "normal" cars run on whatever is at any given petrol station - whether it be supermarket, Esso, Shell or whoever. Same clowns, different circus... or something.

Well, I had an interesting morning. My deisel van was running on fumes so I stopped at a petrol station and put a fivers worth of 4 star in! Half asleep......

Anyway, it ran for a couple of miles, and started to chug, and realising what I had done I stopped. I was near a friends house who "happened" to have 4 gallon of reclaimed vegetable oil mixed with, I think ethanol, and maybe something else. So I banged it in and everything is right as rain!

*crosses fingers*

I have since filled up with reguylar deisel and all seems ok.
