I've been playing the demo and it seems ok-aaay... Very similar to AoK, but then every reviewer says that's how it appears at first, so I'm prepared to give it time.

Played the demo, and I thought it was fantastic, just one question, stops me from getting it. What is the future bit like then, If its crap I won't but EE but if its any good I might just get it, also is their a skirmish mode and if so is it any good.

The future bit is good imo. I usually build up a HUUUUUUUGE squad of Ares II bots with some anti-air-ground units to counter their main weakness, fighters. Got me thru the last few SP missions that did. I expect a human opponent would just mass fighters at the first sign of an Ares squad tho :)

Not really tried any MP modes yet. Will do soon !

I can't really recommend it over Civ3 since I've only played Civ3 for 20 mins so far but they are quite different. EE is real-time, Civ3 is turn-based and HARD. Much harder than 1 and 2 I've been told :)

/edit: I played Civ1 and 2 loads. Great games. A friend told me 3 was much harder.

I've never been in for turn based games myself, but I liked Civ1 a long while ago, EE might be more my 'cuppa with real time. Might just try EE from your recommendation there Wij.

I liked the way the WW1 mission where you had to gain territory and stuff took ages as it should :)

Sierra wasted the 3D EE engine, imo. Most games of this type (Age of Kings for example) are 2D and so can look very very pretty... but two dimensional.

Sierra have gone for a 3D engine which means the graphics are less pretty but move beautifully. Thing is, they don't move very much and therefore the games cuts down its own 'wow' factor.

For example, there's some lovely animations of people, horses, catapults etc moving round and rearing up and firing and so on. There's a lovely, subtle 'zoom' feature where objects supposedly farther away appear a little bit smaller. But there's no facility to rotate the map. While playing I can't zoom in on characters, I can't tilt or swivle to view, even though the engine allows it when it switches to in-game cutscenes.

It's a shame. It would have really made it stand out, cos as it there's some lovely touches but it doesn't go far enough.

Also, why is that this game (and all others of this type) has invested so much time in getting the models accurate, and the details in, yet transport ships are still the size of a horse? It'll like as soon as boats are involved there's an element of representation. This little model represents a big boat. Why do that these days? I want detailed, beautiful models and I want big boats that reflect their capacity, fs.

I rushed this post as I was supposed to be in the pub at 1pm.

Oh, I know. But the game plays just like AoK so far, but the graphics could have placed it head and shoulders above everything else. They were close. Just my €2.

/me wants Age of Mythology
