emi deal

Finally the industry have used common sense. I can't wait for i-tunes either. Getting songs off the internet will probably save me money. I'm the sort of person who walks into HMV and buys random albums hoping they're good. Last time I bought Cream - Greatest Hits, Pixies - Doolittle and some rock compilation album. Still not 'got into' the pixies album. :/

I'd sign up for this deffo, depending on how wide the range of music is.

At last, a decent idea.

I don't think i'd quite sign up to at the way it is set out at the moment. Most of my favourite artists aren't with EMI, but then again theres always kazaa for that :)

It wont work. As much as i'd like to think it would, it wont. 30 pounds, with a 100,000 back catalogue, the company will make a huge loss. Maybe for the 56k, isdn, and even ADSL/cable to an extent, but for Uni's, and big corperations? No way.
Music piracy does happen, everyone knows it. Allowing people with fast connections (JANET etc) to download so much music is an awful idea. They will bang it onto a cd-r, and sell it on. If there's a way the EMI can stop this then fair play.

Just imagine, a Uni student, pays the 30 pound fee, and downloads 50% of the songs, puts them onto cdr, he only needs to sell them as 3 pound each and he's making a big big profit, it'll make things worse. I don't think it's a bad idea, and may work out quite well, but i can't see it working.

If they provide decent songs and tunes, including up to date and rare dance tracks i would be intrested, plus if it came in 160Kbps MP3 format, i would consider signing up, fairly cheap i think, £3.99 a month for as many tracks as you need (didnt see a limit) is quite decent. :)

I'm a strong advocate of the "all you can eat"/subscription based download model.

For me, it comes down to one very clear point: Downloads are not CD quality. If you were to have a service where the quality is average - e.g. 128kbps, so you can listen, which most do, why on eart am I going to pay $1 a track (same as a CD) for that? The quality isn't as good.

To be honest, some of the RIAA endorsed schemes actually offer consumers something worse than what they already have - and I include the iTunes music store in there. If I'm going to buy a download, and then I want a version at higher quality, with artwork etc, I have to specifically buy it twice?!

A subscription system, working on the presentation of "trialing" music, and linking it all together with "Buy a CD" options, is the way to go.

Think of it like "Subscription Radio". I don't know how Sky+ works, but the adverts suggest "Pay a subscription, pick what you want to watch". Why not do the same with music?

I'm more inclined to pay due to the high proportion of tracks on kazaa nowadays that have been buggered up by the RIAA.

15 secs of the tracks then static or numerous "blips" part way through?

My favourite was when I downloaded a file called 'mollys chamber - Kings of Leon' and it turned out to be a 15 second clip of another second of theirs. Namely 'Wasted time' I think you can guess what 15 seconds it was :D
