elite mobs generally have far greater hit points and armour, and in some cases, strength, than a mob normally of that level. their chance to hit, chance to resist and such though, are based on their level still. so a level 20 elite for example can be hit just as much by a lvl 20 character as a normal lvl 20 mob, but it will take a lot more to kill it.

blizzard has a competition... you see.. they split the wow-crew up in 3 sections... one black-team, one silver-tealm and one gold-team... the team with the most players killed from theirs elite mobs, win a trip to australia where they get to pet a kenguru and feed a dingo ...

no such thing at all. This is what they mean.

Black circle mobs: normal ones
Gold circle mobs: Elite and have chanche of dropping rare stuff
Silver circle mobs: Are rare mobs what dont spawn offten and drop lots of loot always, mostly green or blue items. But are very rare and have a long spawn time. Hehe no use to camp them as no spawn timer is for them. The just appear

Actually, the Rake, a silver circle lion in Mulgore spawned 3 times before me. It dropped cool loot indeed (a 65 af chest when the greater i had found was ~40, some cool stats too and some other stuff that was useless), but it was not at all difficult to kill, i was 11 and it was 11 too and i got it and its add down with my shaman without much trouble. So they are only elite as far as loot is concerned, didn't notice anything elite about their abilities.

Silver cirlcle means mob is "named" and slow respawn timer, but its not elite.. Elite "named" mobs have gold circle like any other elites.

Though some mobs have a half gold circle, and half normal black - these are semi elites, usually bosses in non elite areas

The Silver ones aren't though they just kinda tagged with the silver border to show that they are special (and will always drop a green item and maybe in rare cases, which I have yet to see, drop blue items). They sometimes drop just 1 item named after em. Like Slark drops an item called Slarkskin. They can have real long timers but also short ones. Think it's a bit random like in DAoC. But they are sure nice to kill if you spot one.

the guy near him is called gruff (something or other) also in the gnoll camp, and he is a silver elite, gruff drops a nice sword, pretty much everytime you kill him.

I thought the colour denoted whether the mob was tagged or not .. gold is normal elite and silver shows the mob is tagged... Shows how wrong i was :p
