ECC SDRAM.

Getting some more RAM for the computer. I can get 2x 256 sticks for £40 each, or I can get 1x 512 "ECC" stick for £110.

I'm not interested in price busting at the moment, more whether there is a major advantage in having ECC. It's some sort of error checking, but does it work? Or is it just another technology that doesn't matter much?

Also, the chances are the stick currently inside (256) probably doesn't have ECC (I expect I went for price). Are there any problems if I mix and match them?

Doesn't matter that much in a personal computer.

ECC = error code correction, unlike parity memory which will flag a memory error, ecc will correct it. Most memory these days is very reliable so you would usually use it where memory integrity is crucial, for example in a server. One thing to check for is if it is "registered". Similar to buffered, it lets you use lots of sticks for lots of memory, but takes an extra clock cycle so will be slightly slower.
Because of the differences in memory, especially with timing, all sticks should be the same type and not mixed.

What is the difference between "Non ECC Memory" and "ECC MEmory" ? Is it somethin like, ECC has been tested by whoever and it passed?

/Edit

Heh nevermind :p

ECC in a homepoota class system is pointless. The end :)
