It all depends on the positioning and how they are facing, but no info on that was included, so i wouldn't call this a riddle, just an flawed question. Logically, there would be 8 ducks. But how Laddey manage to conjure up 12 of them could be a riddle in itself.

Not really no, if you have 8 ducks like this:

There would be 4 ducks infront of 4 ducks and not only 2.

And if you position them like this:

X X
X X
X X
X X

There would also be 4 ducks beside 4 ducks and not only 2.

The only way the statements amphrax said are true is to have 4 ducks positioned like a square.

Does not beside mean next to, like two ducks beside two other ducks =

X X - X X

And eventually it turns out to this
X X
X X - X X
X X

The "other" ducks in the middle, two beside (left or right doesnt matter). Two ducks in front of, two ducks behind. Maybe you guys are pictioning it from another viewpoint..

Yes it does mean that. But you missed one thing.

X X
X X

There are 2 ducks beside 2 other ducks.

1 2
3 4

The 2 ducks I named "1" and "3" are beside the 2 ducks I named "2" and "4".

And the first row of "1" and "2" is 2 ducks who sits infront of the 2 ducks "3" and "4" in the second row. And the second row sits behind the first row.
