I just read on http://planetblackandwhite that EA have accidently shipped some of the copies of B&W when it was still in it's beta state. Now anyone who finds that they have a beta copy has to ring tech support and send them the game where it will be replaced.

As to the amount of copies that arn't real, i don't know but i know that it isn't just a small problem, quite a lot of people found they had something wrong with their copies a few days ago where B&W tried to connect to the internet the first time they ran it and just locked the game up. People thought it was a driver issue or OS issue... until now.

Here is the post off PBW

Beta Version of BW "Accidentally" Released

Thursday, March 29, 2001, 17:12 | Posted by Catachan

All I can say is: I'm not surprised EA.

Apparently, a huge number of beta versions of Black and White were shipped to stores around the world. EA, it seems, messed up some files and replaced some of the Gold-Version BW files with the betas. I've heard it rumoured that EA intentionally made beta copies in order to get BW out by the 27th. Whatever.

Well, when I heard this news I quickly called EA and emailed Lionhead simultaneously. EA told me that it was an honest mistake. Also, they gave me some interesting news that everyone should know. That bug with the Athlons and the Dial-Up Networking is actually a RESULT of this beta mix-up. How bout that? Anyway, EA plans to announce a recall (if you will) of all the beta copies out there. If you have a copy (and you know you do if you get the DUN error) EA would like you to call them. The promise to either refund or replace your game.

Sorry about all this confusion. At least we can still hope that the final version has no bugs, (heh).

Phone Number: 1-888-842-6388 This is the Account Services Department (the only phone number I could find). EA's not up there with the people friendly tech support.

Lionhead hasn't replied yet, but when they do I'm sure they will be able to shed some light on this serious matter.

Better luck next time eh EA :p

I read about this story on Blues' News, earlier.

If EA really are to blame for this mess-up (apparently, Lionhead say otherwise, but that's probably to be expected), then it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

EA probably thought Black & White was just another excuse to make yet more money behind the developer's back, rather than it being one of the most anticipated PC titles of the past couple of years, and that they should have waited and made sure they got things exactly right. Well done for tarring Lionhead's reputation, EA. :(

This has made me very cautious of buying the game when it first arrives, and if I do decide to purchase Black & White, it'll be the first and last EA title I ever buy.

I've never bought an EA title before, but it looks like we have little choice in the matter here if we want Black & White.
