Steam!

Looking at the steam site it claims to be free and stand alone, giving you extra features if you already own a version of HL.

Has anyone tried installing it without HL or CS retail on thier systems? Does it give you access to the free mods and provide the engine components intself? Or are you limited to the messanger and server browser with nos upport for games?

How the hell does the Wonid system work now that they are giving it away free?

So all someone has to do is create a new account to get round their ban?

Dunno, I'd assume that steam would live registry traces, so you would need to uninstall and delete very well. You'd also have to provide another real e-mail address.

The fact that steam checks and sends the user key files before using a game means it is far less vunerable to cheating. If you are simply banned from one server you are unlikely to want to go and get a new steam id simply to join it again. However we wil see what happens when someone is banned from the whole steam network itself.
