DirectX 8.1 is the standard version to come with Windows XP but as always another DirectX is just around the corner. DirectX 9 has started beta testing and with the recent release of the first beta came the usual leaks. So I decided to see if it would give any benefit by installing the first beta. I first tested DX8.1 with 3DMark2001SE and then DX9 b1 and the results can be seen below:
DX8.1 3Dmark2001SE Results
DX9 b1 3DMark2001SE Results
The DX9 b1 are not really worth installing if you're considering it. They resulted in a drop in performance, which to be honest was expected, and they can also result in problems with games, I had to make a small change in the reg just to get 3DMark2001SE to run. Remember if you install them you can't uninstall them and they expire on 20th Aug 2002.
