How long will CD's and DVD's be around for ? We were talking about it in the pub last night.

High street shops are making less and less profits each year as more and more ppl D/L their music and movies straight from the net.

DVD's are big, susceptable to scratches, and bloody expensive. Who wants to pay £19.99 for a movie when you can get it on [xxx].com for a lot cheaper.

Alternatively I'd sooner be able to buy the movie I want on an SD card that plugs straight into my PDA or phone or laptop.

Anyone got any thoughts ?

Yeah, if flash memories keep gaining capacity as fast as they have done during the last year or so that will probably be the storage medium to replace Cd's and DVDs.

I guess their cost will drop a lot when they are manufactured in quantities like DVDs or Cd's are. Even if not I could imagine systems where you just have a box with a big hard drive and a flash reader/writer in it standing somewhere at home and use that to actually store your stuff. I'd even like that more than having 5 dozen flash thingies lying around on my desk.
You'd take your flash thingie to a shop, plug it in, select what you want, pay for it and go home to transfer it to your harddrive.
