Wondering if anyone else is having this problem.

I installed my original version of HL and downloaded steam etc (i already have HL2 installed also and that works fine and registered no problem) However, when i go to register my "product i already owned" and enter the cd key. I am told that some one else is allready useing my key and it is a duplicate!

I looked up in the help files on the steam website [Link] and they explain that Sierra when publishing the game originally intended the key simply for cd validation etc. and so duplicate/identical keys were made...apparently. Steam told me the only solution is to send to them my original HL CD and the CD key and they shall in return give me a new key, (Although you have to send it to America + add $10!!!!!) or , and I quote 'As an option, you can contact Sierra/VUGames and purchase a replacement CDKey,' .

How bloody annoying and crap is that? Why should I have to buy a new one when i legitimately owned it?? anyhow... hope no one else is having this problem.

Can you not just install the original half-life with out steam getting involved?

When I had the original HL1 installed and then downloaded steam, it copied across all my HL1 settings and data to the steam account. I beleive it also took my original HL1 key out of my registry and registered that to my steam account as I dont think it ever asked me to reregister my original key.

You can, but its the online gaming that steam is required for, You need a steam account to play counter strike/tfc/dod etc. :(

I have the same problem. Bought a new Half - life 1 for my son as I'd swapped his PC and couldn't find the original, tried to register and it said the number was already used. I have to take a picture of the receipt and disc and send it to sierra - what shit customer service.

That's wierd, I remember when HL just got out (and I was a poor man) and my brother bought it, we both used to play on the same CD-key, eventually when later on Steam came out, we were actually able to register both of our accounts (and they still are) on the same CD-Key, all I can think of what has happened is that someone used a Keygen and apparantly has gotten a CD-Key they could register steam with (yours) and they changed the system to 1 account per CD-Key :p

Considering Half-Life 1 costs like 10€ here in the shops, it's indeed a bit crap you have have to send it to the US for 10$ + wait X weeks to finally receive a CD-Key though :/
