Just read Dune: House Atreides

at first, I thought his son wouldn't be able to create the magic of his father... tho I was pleasantly surprised... first book in a while that made me sit up til 2AM cos I simply couldn't put it down

anyone read the other 2 preludes?
House Harkonnen
House Corrino
They just as good as House Atreides?

I've read Atreides and Harkonnen.

The preludes are more similar to the first dune book than the latter books in the series ie you want to read it all very fast :-]

Ugh I absolutely hated them. Read the first and second only because I loved Frank Herbert's universe but I just couldn't stomach reading the third.

One passage in House Atreides really annoyed me:

"...when Rhomber had finally succeeded in eliminating all the targets, he and Leto switched positions and went through more practice maneuvres.
Two house passed swiftly, and finally the Mentat instructed them to return to the Guild Heighliner so they could make themselves comfortable before the Navigator folded space and guided the ship to Kaitain."

Ok it might not be so awful at first glance, but can you imagine those lines being in the middle of one of Frank Herberts books? It'd be like a huge seeping boil slap bang in the middle of milky white skin. You can tell the writer just wanted to finish the chapter and he might as well have just written "And they finished up and went home" for all those two sentences add to the story.

I have to admit that I did enjoy a few parts but on the whole they damaged my vision of the Dune universe and it's gonna take a lot of beer to reset my memory back to how it was before :(

haven't actually read any of Frank Herberts work in english yet

read a translated version (Danish, but it wasn't that good)

thought the preludes might give some more insight.

now, if I could just finish these bloody exams so I have time to read :)

I agree with Cask here, read them, hated them mainly due to the brilliance that is Herbert's writing.
