Dual Boot

So after my virus woes, I want to install linux on my second smaller hdd.

I tried it last night but its still booting off windows even if i set it to only boot from the d drive.

I'm in the process of burning all my stuff to DVD so i can reformat my C, so before that happens, what funky stuff do I need to do to get this working and what flavour of linux would you recommend?

I'm a linux n00b, but I pick stuff up fairly quickly.

You need to use a bootloader...look at the Grub or Lilo section of the manual for whatever distro you are using.

yes try a boot loader.
i would advise making the bootloader on a floppy disk rather than your harddisk at first, to see if it works (dont want to mess up the MBR)
my prefered method (and the best way to not confuse other people)
is to make a disk with syslinux on it, and then put the floppy in when ever you want to boot linux.
there are some guides on www.justlinux.com that are worth noting, in perticular look at:
http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Booting_Your_OS
http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Booting_Your_OS/Loadlin_and_Linux.html
http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Booting_Your_OS/Obtaining_vmlinuz_For_LoadLin.html

i did basically the same thing but put it on a floppy.
if you want me to make an image of my floppy which i used, i can
