I want to get one but only can buy one of them, has anybody had much hands on experience with them yet and tell me which is the better handheld.

most reviews I've read have been very sparse I suppose its to early to tell, but what do you ppl think?

PSP is my personal preference if I was to get any at all. The DS just screams novelty to me rather than serious gaming fun. I've seen the shitty attempts at making games use the stylus and they all just look cack. Since Nintendo don't do much past zelda and mario (imho) the PSP wins by default.

I think both look really rather good, but I gotta say the PSP does look *extra* spangly.

I have a PSP already. *gloats*

Anyway it's really good. The DS is a gimmicky piece of shit.

I'm not biased at all.

gonna get a DS, mainly cos im a nintendo fanboy, but I also like the originality of the design, im bored of the same old shit other companies pump out, nintendo are the only company that try and do new things with peripherals/systems. That said they do churn out mario after mario, zelda after zelda, but then they are always amazing!
I think once developers get used to the ds and start to think of some interesting ideas then we will see some amazing games, whereas the psp is limited to the bog standard run of the mill type of games and I have heard bad things about the build quality and they won't take returns on dead pixels in the screen. That said, you really can't beat the psp on looks, it does look beautiful and the DS does look like a childs toy.

Ninty fanb0i myself, but that said I'll be going for the PSP myself.

DS seems like another Virtual Boy in the making to me. *shrugs*

And yes, I have seen both up and running in the flesh...

At first I thought DS, then I thought ooo purty PSP. Now I think I'm back in the DS camp, and solely on the strength of the software. Some of it may be on PSP too, I haven't checked, but the propsect of some of this lot has me excited. Castlevania DS, Meteos, Bomberman DS, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy, Secret Of Mana, PES :D. (just stick DS on the end of the names, I cba ;)).

Online wireless Bomberman over a double screen :D And Castlevania looks super-peachy.

The ability to take your GT4 game out an about with you to continue on the way into work for instance wins it for me. I'm sure my 7 year old nephew will love the DS tho. It seems about the age range its aimed at.

I've played both and personally the PSP is far more my type of thing.

I'd better remind everyone right now, I work for SCEE and am therefore open to the "Sony Fanboy" accusations and I cant say much to defend against that.
This is a personal opinion, not me toeing the line, but I cant expect everyone to believe that.

The DS is small and feels like a toy for kids. I bet it'll be popular amongst kids, it even feels like its made for small hands tbh. I like the 2 screen idea but I've not seen a game that makes it useful yet. I'm willing to be swayed on that but right now it seems to be just a way of burning battery power needlessly.

The PSP is just in a different league. The widescreen graphics are of a far higher quality and its got a far more professional and finished feel to it.

To be honest, they're both so very different that I think everyone who gets to try them both, even briefly, will be able to decide between them instantly. They're entirely different beasts and the DS, to me anyway, seems to be a GBA with 2 screens but a clunky feel to it, and the PSP is just a small PS2 with its own widescreen. So my advice is to try them, the decision will be easy, you'll know what you want very quickly.

http://www.gamespot.com/psp/

There's several trailers for psp games there. Gotta say, GT4 looks absolutely stunning.

edit: one thing I will say is that the psp looks a bit big and clunky/unergonomic. Question for anyone who's tried one - is it actually comfy?

It's funny you should ask that as it was actually a little bit of a strain on my hands at first. However, I got used to it after a couple of days of playing and am now having no trouble at all. Just takes a little bit of getting used to I think. It is a mighty fine piece of equipment and it looks beautiful.

Also, I've had no problems at all with the square button, dead pixels etc. so I'm not sure but I think I might have just been one of the lucky ones.

Which has the best D-Pad ? Normally Sony D-Pads are utterly toss. Tell me they've really improved it and I may be persuaded to suck Sony's Corporate c0><0r.

P.S. That is NOT Ono.

DS wins by default due to multiplayer Mariokart :)

Wonder if the PSP will have a poorly-executed and under-developed online service like the PS2? ;)

Sony analogue stick is terrible. It has a dead-zone covering 3 quarters of the total movement area :/

PSP's potential regional lock-in is a bit worrying for me. I believe it's voluntary and won't always be used (like xbox) but it's a royal pain the arse otherwise.
