Drum and Bass

K... As some of you know, I make music here and there. I've tried my hand at DnB some years ago, but gave it up until now.

http://www.mp3.com/logic7

The track's called "The Return of Logic State". Logic State was the name I was going to use when producing DnB, I scrapped it when I couldn't get it "right".

Lemme know what you guys think of it. (be gentle!) :p

Hmmm, not my type of DnB at all. Way too indsutrial based. Positive crits:

Don't be so keen to jump straight into the beats. Draw your intros out a touch, tantalise the listener, make them yearn and beg for the beats. It's almost as if you couldn't wait to slap the percussion pattern straight in.

It's almost.....detroit DnB if that's possible :)

Not bad m8, bit on the short side :)

nice dark sounding minor key bassline, nice 'electric' sharp tight samples wid da drumz but like me says, way too short... nice basis to build on, proper drum and bass track with drums... and... bass :) Go menkal messin about with harder, faster paced percussion as the tune goes on to extend it and make it a bit more experimental to make it mo betta :)

Probs by far better than anythin i could do tho, nice 1 :)

Hmm, I thought it worked quite well as it was. You can't put everything you like in every track or they'd all sound the same. Next time put some proper drums on tho :) (and make it a bit longer :))

"why do we have to read this?"

well

some people have lives outside a cold dark cave of a room, with no music... as you must...

some people take an interest in music, and some people appreciate people who have a unique talant as to compose a piece of music... unlike some people who's purpose in life is to put others down....

That is why.

Is it profit based? No. He is just making music as a hobby and after some constructive comments, support, and critisism in a place where people of similar musical taste reside. What I'm sure he was NOT after is some flaming retards shouting at him for no constructive reason whatsoever.

To settle things a bit:

#1. I make no money from mp3.com. Period. I have no albums in the stores, no tracks on someone's compilation, etc. The only thing I do to make a few dollars here and there is DJ, and I don't do that all that often.

and

#2. I just wanted a bit of constructive criticism from people outside of the music community. Europeans have long been known to listen to (and appreciate) more electronic music than Americans, so to ask in a forum like this one woud be ideal. Besides, I've been posting here for, what, maybe a little over a year and a half? I figured no one would mind.

Between Charlie and logic, we actually get some interesting threads, whcih contain something we can take away.

Now we just need TUG to get started like he said he was going to, then he can spam crap like he used to :)

That's bollocks:

Total Payback for Playback* $5.52
Total Earnings
Product Sales, Payback for Playback, and Back the Band $5.52

it may be pittance, and you may not have earned anything this month, or for several months for that matter, but you still get paid per play :p

aiight punk ass! Here it is:

mp3.com won't pay it's artists in any given month/quarter unless you go over $50. Until I see $50 from P4P, I'll get no money. I have another site there - http://www.mp3.com/subject28 - it's been up since January or so. I haven't seen a dime from it. According to mp3.com I've made $24.23 from that site. I haven't seen a cent from it (hell, I even began offering a CD on that site)

If I haven't been paid, then I make no money from it.

Oh... if you wanna play somantic games with my earlier statement about I have no records released too, then lemme offer this to you: The Subject28 mp3.com CD means nothing. I've sold one to date, and that was to myself so that I could see what it looked like. When I'm able to drop a record on Transmat, 430 West, Direct Beat, Warp, or some other REAL label (which mp3.com is not!) then I'll say that I have a record out.

Beat it. Go play on the train tracks or something...

Please don't, there are far too many bad garage songs out there already, go drive your car

hows about a little support here guys? we're only trying to spread the word of good quality (I hope) homemade music. While you are off gurning at Gatecrasher to formulaic trance we're actually making an effort to create something different.

Why do we post here?

a. we play online games and in the uk and europe Barrysworld is the foremost recognised GSP. I've been playing Quake for nearly 4 years now and have been a part of the barrysworld 'community' for a little while as well.

b. we use pcs and the internet for both gaming and music.

c. we're doing something constructive

and

d. yes I'd like to get signed to a proper label, as I'm sure Logic would as well. Mp3.com is a pile of shite, all that exclusive crap is bollocks. Unless you make over 50 bucks you get squat. Thats how mp3.com make the most of their money. By keeping it until its time to pay. By that time the artist has fucked off and they keep the money for themselves. So unfortunatlely for some of you, the UBB world is a good way to get across what we create.

At least we're not making garage music..

oh and finally

e. it said General on the forum description.

Or how about we all stop bl33ting now and either give constructive critisism or fuck off?

I'm hardly DnB's biggest fan but listened to the track anyway. It wasn't too bad, maybe a bit 'shallow', in a sense... i wasn't feeling much when I listened to the track.. i dunno.

I agree with what perplex said about the beats... you should ease people into the track more gently instead of being too straight-up. Otherwise, very promising. nice job on the production, especially.

As for the mp3, pick what you are going for, and stick to it, D&B is either bouncy and for dancing, in which case you need a ton of energy, or for sitting down and listening to, in which case you need a more musical production, junk the drums, they sound horrid, see if you can't get a session drummer to lay donw a few patterns and breaks that you can use then compress the fuck out of them to give the required sound.

Oh my constructive critism

Hi, I'm british! I have been listen to drum and bass since I was around 15 possibly younger, I'm 23 now. I've never liked it that much as i think its a fashion coffee table style and people tend to get into it just to been seen as different and come out of the scene just as fast... but anyway

I won't be gentle. but before I start let me tell you that your minimal tech house effort "simplicity" shows much promise even if it was a bit basic. (and that I can assure you is a high compliment from me)

ok to your "Drum & Bass" track.

It stinks, real bad.. and its not your fault, for some reason in america you get a really crap slice of drum & bass, rarely does any of the djs that founded the scene in the uk visit, or even get heard in the US, instead you get the DJ craze turntablism versions of event, and the horrible electro drum & bass, thats isn't what drum and bass is about, It's ment to be dirty. your track suffers from a lack of influence. the things that make drum & bass good.

for example, the Rolling basslines of great Drum & Bass tracks such as the Ganja Kru's "super sharp shooter" is what makes drum and bass good..

the evil relentless breakbeats of tracks like photeks - "ni ten ichi ryu" and Freestyles "musically dope".

and lastly the influence that drum & bass draws and spits out from Jazz, Dub, Ragga and even disco.... you've made a track which has no influence.

Start over. loose everything.

early forms of it was around in '89 but as I'd have been 10 my mum was reluctant to let me go to raves + I was proably listning to michael Jackson like everyone else :)

then it became the ragga influenced jungle, then moved onto jump - up, art core, jazzy

then calling it Junin about 96 people stopped gle and it became drum and bass. thats when it offically came to its peak in my opinion, not musically but as a scene..

of course then came Speed Garage and 2 step both poor spin offs of drum and bass.. but as a lus from them has come breakbeat garage which is pretty good :)

its a circle of chance
