I've decided i'm going to see more of my own country and take a drive with mates round the best driving roads in the UK where speed cameras are unheard of and the only traffic is the occasional deer crossing the road.

My planned trip is this (starting/finishing just outside Edinburgh). Stop off's include:

Loch Lomond
Fort William
Glen Coe / Ben Nevis
Glenfinnan
Loch Ness
Inverness
Pitlochry
Glenshee
Gleneagles

Last time I was up north I was about 6, so I don't know the best things to see or best places to stay. Anyone got any recommendations? There are plenty website on sightseeing but i'd prefer individual input of like-minded people.

Edit: the purpose of this trip is mainly driving and enjoying the speed ;).

Make it a proper road trip and rent out a mini bus, VW Van or a MPV.

Hell no, that would suck. Driving trip, as in, take your car and drive very fast ;). A van/MPV would totally detract from the whole thing.

I don't know anyone who'd drive up Loch Lomond for fun - it's a shit road full of blind corners & accidents (I saw a biker being hit there years ago). As a passenger you get to see lots of lovely scenery, as a driver you don't.

When are you planning to do this trip - 'cause I'm sure when the weather gets real bad they can close-off Glencoe. Some mates of mine got stuck there once during a blizzard and, on a detour, the car went down an embankment and rolled over, after 2/3 hours (by a complete fluke) a burly farmer happened by and flipped their car back on it's wheels for them (which 4 of them couldn't even do themselves!...must be the porridge).

:D

St Andrews is nice yes, and there some great roads leading to it. You'll have to cut off the M90, burn across country (loads of places to overtake all the doddering Fifers doing 40), then after you've seen it (I would it's a great wee town, and seeing as you're a golfer the Old Course has to be checked out) burn back up towards Dundee then take the A90 towards Perth. It's not too much of a detour and its definitely worth it.

1. Bikes suck.
2. We'll be doing the trip in the height of summer, so it's highly unlikely to snow.
3. We're planning to stop fairly regularly (the total drive time according to the AA is about 10 hours) so we're doing it over three days so not a lot of heavy driving, but certainly fast and enjoyable driving; allowing enough time to take pics, see the sights and drink beer at night.

Totally Bodhi, I think we're going to detour to St Andrew's being keen golfers as you say.

St Andrews, the brewery - anywhere else?

2nd the midge spray - especially near woodland, they are fucking vicious.

I wish I was coming with you G, I'd love to do a driving trip. I quite fancied driving from Barcelona up to Monaco and back while I'm in Spain, but circumstances have changed and I'll be flying back for a few days (I was originally planning to stay out there for a few days inbetween jobs).

One day I'll take my car off to the Alps and generally go very fast.

Go to the Talisker distillery on Skye. A bit out of you way but well worth it.

A front wheel drive car that corners as fast as the 182 does will cock a wheel during extreme cornering.

Thats a sign of how stiff the chassis and suspension are.

Slightly off-topic, but are all our resident Scots scrounging bastards? :) Why is one not surprised :m00:

On a visit to the Scottish Borders back in the mid 90's I remarked to the landlady how expansive the Scottish scenery is. She replied, horrified, "Expensive?!! Where is it expensive?!!!"

Back on topic, though, I loved the west of Scotland and the borders region - beautiful scenery and a lot of places of historical interest. I doubt you'd be interested in seeing the oldest churches in the UK, but they are found up there.

Scots are so tight you couldn't slide a fiver between the cheeks of their arses.

I don't know what you're talking about. I have one rule. No Shermans.
