Driving Test

Yay!!!!! I'm just returned from my practical driving test and I passed this time. This was on my third recent attempt (I'm trying to ignore the fact I sat and failed the test 3 times when I was a young student - over 12 years ago).

What a god almighty sense of relief! I was amazed at how physically and mentally stressful it was: sitting, failing, and re-booking the test month after month.

Hopefully soon I'll get a motor, and can start moaning about road tax, fuel costs and other related matters.

Congratulations! I passed in 1988, so I have no idea about what bollocks they make you do now. Driving lessons then were about safe driving, and not how to pass a test :)

Can I suggest you take an extra driving lesson or two for motorway use? If you haven't already driven on a motorway, its a very different thing to driving on the roads, and some people find it very intimidating.

Ta for reminding me tom - do Pass Plus, the council for my area gave me a tenner for doing it. Plus it should drop about 10-20% off your insurance

Kinda like, drinking a laxative after a hardy meal that was a bit stubborn eh?

Thanks all. I've already discussed taking a couple of motorway lessons with my instructor. Instructors have got to sit the new Hazard Perception part of the theory test soon, and he's clueless about computers and suchlike - so, we're doing a deal whereby I will give him a wee lesson on the Hazard Perception stuff on my comp - just to give him an idea of what he's got to do, and what it looks like. Bargain.

I'll bear the PassPlus stuff in mind, but at the moment, I think simply getting a few motorway familiarisation lessons will stand me in good stead.

Well done Mofo8, now I am going to ask a personal question :). How old are you ? its just that I am being nagged into learning to drive, the wife has become increasingly sick of staying sober :(. I am quite old (37) :) and it is a bit daunting. I would just like some re-assurance that 'old people' can learn too.

I'm 34 at the moment. I took lessons and sat tests when I was around 19, and foolishly gave up after 3 attempts. I was determined to keep at it this time. I can't see age being and barrier to taking lessons and sitting the test.

My driving has been fairly reasonable for a good while, and I put the fails down to nervousness. It's amazing how something like that can be so stressful. I've always been calm and fine in interview and exam situations, but the driving test was completely different.

Does anyone pass their test first time anymore? Everyone I know has failed once or twice recently.

Driving is great.

I passed first time. My wife passed first time too :)
I then bought her a car, she drove it twice, then said I dont like driving, and that was the end of that.
Good thing too really :)

I passed my theory getting 30/35 first time around, was quite chuffed really since i bought the Theory CD the day before and remembered all the questions which were asked (WIN!)

Then i passed driving test - practical, i thought i failed and i started to lose heart throut it, but then he said i passed. (WIN2!).

I made the mistake of not doing Pass+, how i rue the day for not doing it as if you want a decent car it could save money on insurance. Fucks :/

Well done Mofo8! (I've been busy lately - phone you later)....

If you need help/advice looking for a run-around I can ask my brother-in-law Eddie for assistance if you want (he's been building bikes & cars for 15-20 years)...just don't get an MG (heh)...

:D

Failed :(

Two serious and 7 minors (4 of which was looking in the mirror, or not as the case may be).

Serious 1: Creeping up to a queue of traffic, let myself get too close. I pressed the break a second before him. :/

Serious 2: Didn't leave enough room on my left in a tight fit on a side-road. Lucky I didn't have the wing-mirror off. Even worse, I didn't even notice :/

So, no arguements obviously but still I'd rather have failed on something more substantial.

Next test 12th Jan :S
