As i am finding the most common problems in here are driver related or steming from having older drivers, here is the link to the Drivers and Utilities thread from the Hardware forum, all the way up there

Use this as your first port of call for the latest driver updates and many other useful utilities. Update all relevant drivers then post your problem if it continues.
Now updating all drivers to the latest may not be the best options especially with directx, but with windows XP this can in most cases be simply "Rolled back" with no harm done.
DirectX: Updating to the latest version of DirectX is not always the best solution. As it cannot be rolledback without a full OS format.
