Hi all,

my friend, from university (whos appently popular round these parts?) has got me back into mmorpgs and so im going to try out this wee beasty, see what i think. At the moment im downloading the trial, as he has an account i can use, plus hes got the CD's, and i want to warm up get and playing as soon as possible (i.e. before thursday night).

Anyway, anyone confirm that if im playing the trial, that i will be able to interact with him, as i have (rarely, but its a fact) played some trials, where the trial players can't actually interact with real players, and are stuck on some random server.

Anyone clue me in?

Cheers,

I gave a friend of mine also a trialkey by using the buddy system and he had no problem to create a character and play on the same server I'm playing on.
So as far as I know you can create a character on any server you want but you're limited to the content of the classic Dark Age of Camelot areas so no SI or ToA altho you will be using the upgraded SI engine.

SI= shrouded isles = the first expansion (an island off the coast of each realm and stuff)

ToA = Trials of Atlantis = the second expansion (the lost island of atlantis and the elemental planes where the trials happen)

if you stick to the old world you'll be fine though :)

SI = Shrouded Isles

ToA = Trials of Atlantis

These are the new expansions to the original DaoC, you wont (apparently) be able to go to these new areas, but fear not the old areas are huge and plentiful. And to be honest not that much different to the new areas in playability.

If you like the game then you will have no problems in these other areas later on

Indeed, fast and helpful.

Ah i see, so much to learn.

My friend, whos name i will revel later on when he tells me what it is on here ;) is going to lend me a extra account he has, until i can work out if i want it or not, but as that wont be til thursday, i thought i would check out the trial anyway.

Hopefully see some of you in game?

Don't be afraid to pm ppl and ask the odd question...

If you don't go mad and take up too much of their time, a lot of players are more than happy to help out a genuine new starter...

We're not a bad bunch really, even if we do like to insult each other here :)

Hehe, i've noticed, however its amusing so feel free to throw those "noob" chants my way.

I' played EQ on and off for a few years, including beta testing the euro servers (the ones actually in france), which has been wicked and kool, made some brilliant friends and had a kool time. However i found that i got to a point where, i couldn't continue to get anywhere, i had hit a brick wall.

No matter how much time (and money!) i pounded into it i was getting no where fast, and the server was filling up with ebayers, and other such idiots and so it ground down to nothingness for me.

Ill try not to take up anyones time (im happy teaching my self everything, including NOT getting powerleveled stupidly so i learn to play my chara!). But some times there is various things i just wont know, and so ill be leaning on you guys for help ;)

Btw do you all play the same server / relm / guild or are you all spread about, and this is just a comunial place which you chat?

Shouldn't really reply to my self, but it saves confusion i guess.

Right, my mate came online, on msn and told me about somewhere different, where i can download SI & Classic together (1.1gig, ouch) using a client, but have to put the cd key in.

Just as hes about to give me his spare cd key, msn decides to shut down, Oh the joys!

A good thing to do might be to type /advice when you are in the game and have a question, with any luck it will list a few names of people who are normally more then happy to answer a few questions.

Additionally if you check the official webby http://daoc.goa.com/en there is a list of volunteers called Eyes and Ears broken up by server and realm who are also available to help and or get ahold of a GM if you get really stuck, the GMs are also available in game periodicly between 10am and 11pm (cet) monday through friday and they (we) can be found by doing a /who 100

Good Luck!

Additionally, if you use IRC, there's a couple of channels on Quakenet that can be of use.

#E&E is a channel where the some of the aforementioned volunteers can be found (those that choose to use IRC that is, and they will be ops in that channel) and though most of us (me for example) are only idling there for half the day, you can also get help from other players if you have any questions. Most of the people in the channel are quite helpful, and if you do actually need to get a hold of a GM, the volunteers in there can usually help with this, unless, ofc, it's 2am on a Sunday morning when there's no hope :D Use this channel if you can't find an E&E or, more importantly, a GM ingame if you are stuck.

Is there a command, which "flags" you as needing a GM, or is it a case of you hope one appears online when you are?

Nope, in the US version you got the /appeal command, but it won't work in european DAoC.
In europe you got 3 ways to contact a GM:

1) Wait for one to go online (/who 100) and PM him
2) Use rightnow (GOA's CS tool, you can access it via https://faq.camelot-europe.com/)
3) Contact an E&E person via IRC or ingame

Anyway, here are some links that should get you startet:

1) http://daoc.catacombs.com This site has a great Character builder, which helps a lot trying to figure out how to distribute your skill points

2) http://camelot.allakhazam.com Has some very nice Databases with Items, Zones, Mobs etc. and it also has a small newbie guide (not 100% up to date, but should help get you started)

3) http://daoc.warcry.com Has a nice Quest list (Compendium -> Quests) where you can easily find quests at your level.

4) http://vnboards.ign.com/ This page is the (semi)-official american board, there's a LOT of whine there, but in between you can find some awesome info, you just need to learn to ignore the flames and whines ;)

5) http://www.daoctradeskills.com This site was great once, but isn't up to date nowadays anymore, but if you want to try crafting you will be able to learn the basics there, although the spreadsheets are outdated. The boards are still very active though, so might be worth it to check it out.

Think those are some of the more popular sites out there.
Oh, and welcome aboard, always nice to see new people join the game
:)
