I recently upgraded my Broadband speed from a 512k to 1meg.
The speed of my downloads has not changed
My isp say its deffo running at 1meg and BT say my line can handle 2 meg.
I have a Connexant router, using IE6,700+ mem, 3200 athlon, network card is also fine so comp spec is ok.
I have splitters in the correct places.
Could it be something to do with my router ? maybe the router has an auto firewall
My ISP told me to go to this certain webby to get the speed of my downloads, it came back and told me my speed was so slow I should write a letter and send it and I will recieve the reply before you download anything over 1 meg

Well, having a fast link doesn't mean you'll get a fast download necessarily. It depends on how much bandwidth the server can give to you that is the limiting factor if your connection isn't.

There's two ends to each pipe. If your end is big and the other is small, you won't get much traffic, same way the other way around.

If you're referring to GOA, I get about 350KB/sec from GOA right now.

1mbit should give you about 100KB/sec download at best. (There's a little overhead for the TCP protocol, can the 1000/1024 confusions.

with the 512 you should have around 60kb per sec or so. and around 100Kb after per sec. some older routers was designed for slower speed and couldn´t handle higher speed connections

example i had a old netgear with adsl 512kbit. moved to another apartment and there it was 10Mbit and that was like yikes how slow. couldn´t see any improvments bought a new and now i can use the full speed from the 10mbit

My DL speed starts very high, 125 for example then it goes down in chunks and ends up at about 43KB/sec and stays there ?
I also tried my dsl modem which I got from my isp with no change

Make sure u try and download from a reliable source like ftp.sunet.se (in sweden) or ftp.cdrom.com or find some site close to you.

There are too many factors at work here.

You can ignore the first few seconds of download (where it jumps to 130kb/s) as that's just a "bug" with tcp/ip. Not an accurate description but close enough.

We need an accurate download to test your speed really. And since we're playing DAoC here, we'll borrow GOA. Believe it or not GoA's webpage downloads are top on speed and max out my connection every time. I download at 220kb/s every time from this link with no variance. Download this : It;s over 100mb so you can cancel it at some point.

Ignore the first few seconds and try and tell me what the average is.

Can you also tell me the model of the router so I can check into the specs of it? I'm assuming you're on an ADSL router connected to the PCs ethernet card, and not a modem directly into the PC?

Find out if your ISP "throttles" your connection, meaning they might have it limited to your old speed still and need to change it to a higher one

Well, from what I can gather the ADSL router is easily capable of speeds higher than that, so we can rule out the router. There are some issues with setting up NAT for some P2P sites but that's irrelevant as it wouldn't slow your speed down like this to a site like GoA's.

So, my best guess is that's its either your ISP or your line.

I'd get on the phone to them again and have a good old shout.

Having a slow downloadspeed on ur DSL line depends of many factors. The state of ur phone line and internal phone lines in ur house is one of them.

Having too much noise on ur line (due to bad splitters, old lines, interfereance from another phone line...) can cause ur download speed to drop, but in most cases it just drops the DSL sync.

Other reason is that ur still synced at 512Kbps instead of 1Mbps. Now I don't know ur router, but i'll lookinto it to see if there is a way to be sure that it's synced at 1Mbpbs.

Now, the way IE shows the download speed, is just an estimation, it's ofcourse quite accurate, but if it drops from 150kb to 50kb it's just the program itself, trying to recalculate download speed, it's has nothing to do with bugs.

What u can do, is to instal DU Meter http://www.dumeter.com/download.php and try it out, it's very acurate and shows the current bandwith beeing used.

I'll check the model of ur router and keep u posted.

Where's the router plug in? Is it directly into the main socket in your house, or do you have another phone socket upstairs or somewhere you plug the adsl filter into?

If you connect directly into the main socket, then there's nothing else you can do at your end. If you connect to a split-off connection from the main phone jack, then it could be your wiring being pish.

If you don't connect into the main phone socket, try doing that and see. If you do, then my best guess is still you ISP or BT,.

I was on the phone to my ISP and they went through everything with me and he said everything was ok, I mentioned the extension wire from the BT box and he jumped on it........he reckons that ordinary BT phone wire is not sufficient to run a decent speed of DSL
Ok here goes an explanation of my wireing.

1 = BT box
2 = DSL filter
3 = Comp

I think u might to far from the DSLAM in ur area.

DSL works best within 6 km from the local DSLAM, wich is basicaly the device wich sends u the DSL signal. More then 6km will still give u a dsl signal, but a weaker signal resulting into sync drops and low bandwith.

Just my 2 cents.

Just a little update for you guys,
My ISP is getting together with BT to do line test because I sat for 2 hours working through the problems and the guy on the other side gave up
My ISP asked to try the test BT socket, I said what test socket its a very old box on the wall, its been painted over. :eek2: what a response I got

It's true there's a possibility you're just too far from your local exchange.

I live in Leeds and a town called Pudsey has my local exchange. On an 8meg service with UK Online I can receive 2meg, whereas my mate who lives a 10 minute walk away, can get the full 8meg service. So even a distance of a mile and a half loses me 6 meg.

My bet would be that your phoneline to the pole is ancient, as you said the box is ancient and has been painted over which is a good sign of old wiring. To run ADSL properly they need to install a copper based wire from house to pole, otherwise the adsl layer will be distorted and constantly adapting the rate to compensate for line noise and signal degradation. If you are only able to get 340kbit speeds on a 1mbit line then there is definately an issue with either the line, the exchange or the ISP.

New develpment, I logged on at 6am and I got a massive increase in DL speed, prolly what i'm supposed to get, but as the day wore on it dropped right off again
My ISP is NTL Freedom witch is not cable but ADSL btw (no laughing)
They doing a line test as we speak so fingers crossed

BT rang me and said there is no fault on my line.
My ISP rang me and said everything was ok .
I ran the test and everything was perfect.
